Book Description

23 Oct 2003 185306825X 978-1853068256
The English canal network becomes increasingly popular and widely used each year. The main aim of this book is to explain how everything works - from locks and lifts, to tunnels and towpaths. Stan Yorke, a life-long narrow boat enthusiast, explains in an easy-to-understand manner the story of the canals. In this he is ably assisted by his son Trevor's superb drawings and diagrams. The book is divided into three clear sections. The first describes the history of the canals, the second looks at their structures and features, and the third suggests special sites of interest around the country, which can be visited by foot or by boat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative 26 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book to provide me with some background information before my first barging holiday. I found it hugely informative and it really enhanced the enjoyment of my holiday. The diagrams were very helpful and I would recommend this book to others. In fact I have already lent it to a number of friends and I have only been back from my holidays for a month! A great read.

For those who have never lived in a land with a canal system - this is a book that does a nice job of explaining how and why English canals came into being.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great if You Like the Nitty Gritty of Infrastructure 3 Aug 2012
By Marco Antonio Abarca - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Stan and Trevor Yorke are the great explainers of English infrastructure. They have produced a number of great books about English architecture and infrastructure as part of the "England's Lving History" series. These are wonderful books for all those who love the details of how infrastructure works. If you are looking for a general history of the English canal system, look somewhere else. But if you want to know about the little details of how locks and canals work, this is your book. Both Yorkes are solid illustrators and good writers. Highly recommended.
