By Ruth Ludlam VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This CD blends both the old and the new with superb skill. It aims to present the best of English choral anthems from the nineteenth century until pretty much the present day. I can't fault its taste - highlights for me are "Faire is the heaven" and Bainton's "And I saw a new heaven". Although every track is well chosen, and King's College Choir do themselves proud, particularly on Howells' "Like as the Hart".

It's quite a shame that this album is so suitable for mood music, as it really pays to listen to it properly. I find the first half of the disc contains some of the most haunting and beautiful music I have ever heard, at the risk of sounding like a cliche. Admittedly, I don't enjoy the last couple of tracks as much as the first eight, but they are still performed with consumate skill, and are perfectly listenable. Frankly, it's worth buying this CD for "Faire is the Heaven" alone, if you are in any doubt.

Finally, I would just like to add that the choir sing beautifully, and even the most picky musical perfectionist cannot find fault with their technical skill. The standard of the performance is world-class, as you would expect from Kings. The final notes of the Howells really are utterly beautiful and so well done.

If you like classical music, and have any taste, you should buy this CD. If you have never really listened to choral music before, this is a great place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for track two alone... 14 July 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is a sublime colletction of some of the best modern choral music ever composed. If your preference of choral music is more towards the classical or Baroque era, such as the Messiah, then this may not be what you are looking for. I think all, with the possible exception of the first track was composed in the 20th Century and is amongst the most moving music ever sung in a church - and I should know, having been a member of a church choir myself for over ten years.

As would be expected by Kings' College, the performance is superb. The CD is also a bargain on amazon, and the price is worth paying for a copy of 'And I Saw a New Heaven' alone. This anthem, by the little-known Englishman Edgar Bainton is set to some of the moving, powerful and passionate text of Revelations, the last book of the Bible. The fantastic word painting and dynamics are enough to move even the most hardened atheist.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the Glories of Fine Church Music 20 Mar 2007
By R. Shillingford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This collection of English Anthems is a real treasure for anyone who wants to here good Church Music in a glorious Setting. The two Anthems that would simply bring tears to your eyes and send shivers down your spine for me are the Edgar Bainton And I saw new Heaven and the Kenneth Leighton Let all the world with the final chords dying out on that sonorous Double 32 Trombone of the magnificent Harrison Organ.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect performance 5 Mar 2007
By Nancy Wiley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This recording is remarkable in the consistency of its superb sound.

The anthems selected are all excellent - most are well known, but there are a few "hidden treasures". The choir's tone is beyond criticism, as is the organ.

The performance of Harris's "Faire is the Heaven" is spine-tingling.

I can think of few recordings more fitted to begin a collection of English choral music, and if you already have recordings of most anthems on this CD, these performances are heartily recommended to hear nonetheless.

I certainly consider this CD a wonderful purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious!! 25 Sep 2000
By "sblake8" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
An earlier LP from King's in the 70's under the then Conductor Sir David Willcocks touched upon some of these choral'gems'. The present conductor Stephen Cleobury continues this tradition with some of the same and several 20th century anthems. Glorious singing of the highest standard!! The choir is in fine form here. Particular highlight's are 'Faire is the heaven' and 'And I saw a new heaven'. Recommended wholeheartedly!!
