This CD blends both the old and the new with superb skill. It aims to present the best of English choral anthems from the nineteenth century until pretty much the present day. I can't fault its taste - highlights for me are "Faire is the heaven" and Bainton's "And I saw a new heaven". Although every track is well chosen, and King's College Choir do themselves proud, particularly on Howells' "Like as the Hart".
It's quite a shame that this album is so suitable for mood music, as it really pays to listen to it properly. I find the first half of the disc contains some of the most haunting and beautiful music I have ever heard, at the risk of sounding like a cliche. Admittedly, I don't enjoy the last couple of tracks as much as the first eight, but they are still performed with consumate skill, and are perfectly listenable. Frankly, it's worth buying this CD for "Faire is the Heaven" alone, if you are in any doubt.
Finally, I would just like to add that the choir sing beautifully, and even the most picky musical perfectionist cannot find fault with their technical skill. The standard of the performance is world-class, as you would expect from Kings. The final notes of the Howells really are utterly beautiful and so well done.
If you like classical music, and have any taste, you should buy this CD. If you have never really listened to choral music before, this is a great place to start.
