Product Description

England, the home of football. This is where it all started...

There have been many pivotal moments in the rich history of the England national football team, but few have had such an impact as those between 1920 and 1966. This fledgling era saw the opening of Wembley Stadium; the outbreak of World War II; the introduction of the World Cup competition, and England's subsequent victory.

Charting the national team's progress through some of the greatest matches from an era before widespread television coverage, this programme takes a look at the stars of the game and the most important events in the team's history, culminating in a proud Bobby Moore lifting aloft the Jules Rimet trophy for a gleeful Wembley crowd.

With great football from the likes of Bobby Charlton, Billy Wright, Tom Finney, Stanley Matthews, and Duncan Edwards, as well as remarkable rarely seen match footage and fascinating commentary from the news reporters of the day, this programme is a charming insight into earlier years of the national team.

This is not the DVD for a johnny-come-lately fan of the 2000s. It is a high quality production, with authentic original Pathe footage from many of England's matches between 1920 and 1966, linked by narration from Barry Davies. The picture quality is inevitably a little shaky in places, but this is a treasure trove of rarely seen footage, including the Battle of Highbury against Italy in 1934, the 4-0 win in Italy in 1948, the match against Switzerland in the 1954 World Cup and the 4-2 victory in the first ever match against Brazil. And despite the title, not all the matches are England victories: for example, all nine goals from the 6-3 defeat to Hungary are also included. Minor quibbles: three World Cups (1950, 1958 and 1962) are not even mentioned, and there's a little too much time spent on the unofficial wartime games, but overall this is an outstanding DVD of a quality that is all too rarely seen in modern productions.
