About the Author

Zara Colchester and Charlotte Sainsbury-Plaice met when Zara tried to buy one of Charlotte's horses. In the end Charlotte couldn't bear to part with it and Zara's long journey across country looked like a dead end. Instead, the two became great friends and in 2002 they set up Stately Rides (www.statelyrides.co.uk) bespoke holidays on romantic rides staying in private homes. Charles Sainsbury-Plaice is one of the world's leading equine and equestrian photographers, booked regularly by Country Life, Horse & Hound and The Field.

I love this book. It is a an absolutely delightful read with an abundance of awe inspiring stunning photography.
It's a down to earth guide (with an excellent glossary) but it also tells a wonderful, humorous story of the author's experiences of their routes across England & the Welsh Borders.
England on Horseback would give anyone the confidence to explore our amazing country with their equines or indeed anyone who has a passion for our countryside and heritage.
Some of my favourite quotes include `In riding a horse we borrow freedom' and `When you are on a great horse you will have the best seat you could ever have'. I grab this book whenever I need a little escapism and am planning some of the rides next year now that the homework has been done for me.
I do hope they bring out another one. Enjoy!

This is such a beautiful and inspiring book, I gave it to my Mum for Christmas, but I loved it so much that I had to get myself a copy too. The photography is breathtaking and it is really well written, informative and funny. This book which takes you on a journey around our extraordinary countryside and whenever I pick it up to read I just want to leap on a horse and go exploring! I just hope this talented team will bring out another book... . perhaps Europe next?

Beautiful photographs accompany this fabulous companion to rides around England. Although I bought this book as a gift I did take a quick look inside and now feel inspired to follow some of these stunning rural routes myself. The authors have done a great job in balancing the necessary directions for it to be a guide book with the prose of an interesting adventure. Highly recommend.
