Review

'This excellent book covers all the practical and non-practical issues faced in today's emergencies. No engineer should go on an emergency mission without a copy of this book in their bag.' Paul Sherlock, Oxfam 'Its use is highly recommended for all relief fieldworkers who have to deal with emergencies.' Disasters 'This amazingly comprehensive book admirably covers a vast range of aspects the relief worker will deal with... an indispensible reference book.' New Civil Engineer --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

Engineering in Emergencies is a hugely successful practical handbook for all relief workers involved in giving humanitarian assistance. It provides the information needed to implement an effective engineering response in the aftermath of an emergency. The second edition of Engineering in Emergencies maintains the practical content of the first edition but has been revised and updated to reflect developments in humanitarian relief in recent years. The combination of 'hard' topics, such as water and sanitation, and 'soft' topics, such as managerial skills and personal effectiveness, has been retained from the original edition and the book expanded to include two new chapters on security and telecommunications. The new second edition will be available both as a book and as a handy CD-ROM, especially designed to be light and easily portable for relief workers in the field. Engineering in Emergencies is developed in collaboration with the agency RedR - Engineers for Disaster Relief, based in Westminster. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Format:Paperback
An excellent resource for charities and NGOs working in the developing world. It covers topics from working in armed conflict zones to drought and famine with comprehensible detail. Its an ideal guide for operations at a field level including practical solutions for planning, logistics and many unexpected and difficult scenarios that may arise in the field. It also includes essential aspects such as personnal effectiveness, colleague relationships and stress which are essential to a successful operation. Finally, there is an extremely clear section detailing the international relief system, management issues, planning and logistics.

This is the first edition of an excellent reference book. The second edition has two important additional chapters on communications and security. Depending on your budget it might be worth spending that bit more to have the second edition especially given the growing security problems in humanitarian relief.

This book covers, in a very practical and comprehensive manner, many of the basic engineering works a water and sanitation engineer may be required to supervise in the field.

Focussed on an emergency context the book tackles both logistical and watsan works and I would very much recommend it to individuals working in both types of role.
