This whole series of books is pretty well written and the books are constructed of nice materials. They are cheap and will teach you stuff, but they are not for people who've been making music for a long time and want to get better at it. They are really for people who know nothing about music and want to learn the concepts before applying them. I'm personally all about just clicking stuff and twisting knobs and seeing what happens.
A lot of the information is either common sense or slightly outdated. You'd be best getting the table of contents and just looking up some tutorials about the concept on YouTube. Haha but if your class requires the book like mine did, you'll have to buy it. Some places sell copied of this book for like $5 on here, scoop it up when you get a good price and it makes the book very awesome. Make sure to use the DVDs that usually come with these books :)
