To me American Music Club occupy territory somewhere between slowcore bands like Galaxie 500 and later 'sadcore' bands like Red House Painters, whom Mark Eitzel's a fan of, and draws influences from artists like Gram Parsons, Nick Drake and most importantly The Velvet Underground's third album. But unlike some of those artists AMC is a rock band albeit of a country-rock distinction. Many people choose to label AMC as depressing miserablists and thus the sadcore moniker seems to stick, but what's so sad and depressing about it? Well nothing really, I find it to be quite therapeutic in the best tradition of all boozy artists. Bukowski, Fante, Lowry and Brautigan wrote books about similar characters that Eitzel is writing about and its those books that keep a smile on this face. There's plenty of humour and touching scenes in "Engine" but I suppose that all depends on which side of the fence you're formulating your conclusions. Come on my friend have another drink and let's destroy the world outside.

From this album through Everclear American Music Club hit a creative streak that puts them firmly at the head of my favourite ever bands. Engine has a superb production, the band almost rock out on a couple of tracks and Eitzel's songwriting begins to hit the heights that would make him a cult hero. It doesn't quite rate the full 5 stars as a couple of the songs on side 2 aren't quite top notch but the first 5 songs (of which "Nightwatchman" is the best) are as strong an opening as they come.

This is an incredible album. It's a harrowing emotional ride, with Eitzel (possibly the greatest white soul voice in rock) in devastating form. The lyrics are as brutally crushing as ever, but delivered with greater passion than any other AMC release. This album will claw it's way under your skin. You will never, ever forget it.

Anyone who is wondering what all the fuss is about when they read hyperbolic AMC reviews really needs to get hold of this, California and United Kingdom. Of the three, California is, for me, their seminal album but very hard to acquire. Mercury heralded in a new era, and is in itself a very good album but lacks the raw, hopeful / hopeless edge that these albums exude.
The current lineup is but a pale shadow of what went before. Pleasant tunes, political digs and the feeling that Eitzel is trying desperately hard to stir up the passion which once flowed so freely. A number of the old songs alluded to the difficulty of surviving in the real world without the protective haze of alcohol; what's happened since is the consequence of such a course of action.
