Product Description

Grateful parents and professionals worldwide have welcomed this essential guide to the highly recommended Floortime approach for treating children with any of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Now available in paperback, Engaging Autism includes new, exciting information on neuroscience research into the effects of this approach, plus guidance for parents navigating the controversies surrounding the treatment of autism. Unlike approaches that focus on changing specific behavior, Greenspans program promotes the building blocks of healthy emotional and behavioral development. He shows that, remarkably, children with ASD do not have a fixed, limited potential, and may often join their peers to lead full, psychologically healthy lives. The Floortime approach can also be applied at any age-including early infancy, when the first signs of risk for ASD may appear-so that preventing the full development of autism becomes a real possibility.

Excellent book 8 Mar 2012

Format:Paperback
This is a great book to help parents & professionals understand more about Stanley Greenspan's DIR: Floortime model. Its easier to read than the child with special needs and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about floortime & DIR even if their child doesn't have autism.

I first read this book by the brilliant Dr Stanley Greenspan over a year ago. Floortime really is the hands down method for children with ASD. I cannot rate it highly enough, and after only reading the first few pages I knew I had found the right approach for my then nearly 3 year old son. There is no rote learning here.. it is all child centered and really goes to the emotional connection of the child with the caregiver. My son who could not engage for long periods, has now, a year later, made huge strides forward up the developmental ladder using DIR/Floortime. It is great for parents/teachers/caregivers/play partners as it breaks down the child's current developmental level so you know where the child is at and what to work towards. The book goes into the six functional developmental levels of child development. If you want continual engagement and communication, real emotional understanding, imagination and logical and creative thinking for your child rather than robotic rote learning, then pick up this book. What is so great, is that parents can start using this at home with their child straightaway, and put in all the necessary hours at home for their intervention (getting Floortime practitoners - OT & ST's, is a big plus of course)

Buy this book! If you put in the time to help your child, you WILL NOT be disappointed. My son has changed so much.

Not really for Parents 23 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This is more like a Text Book on Autism. I found it really theoretical and hard to read. Not for parets of autistic children, at least not me. I found myself picking up this book with firm intentions of reading it only to get bogged down very quickly in what was for me non-essential information which did not correspond to my high functioning 4 year old boy and then putting the book down. While this may say more about my attention span than the quality of the book, as a busy mum of three children I say 'who has the time?' (not me!)
