Product Description

Product Description

Ondine is pleased to announce the first release of an Enescu cycle with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of its artistic director Hannu Lintu. George Enescu is Romania s most important composer and one of the most neglected composers of the 20th century. Artistic director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra since 2009, Hannu Lintu has rapidly been creating an international career and is a sought-after conductor. Previous work from the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Hannu Lintu and Ondine include Rautavaara s opera Kaivos (ODE 1174-2) and a recording with works by young Finnish composer Uljas Pulkkis (ODE 1176-2). This release will be the first of an Enescu cycle with Hannu Lintu. Two more featuring, among others, symphonies no. 1 and 3 will follow 2013 and 2014.

Review

This new recording of the Second Symphony is as good as any out there: Hannu Lintu captures both its headlong impetus and its gorgeous languor, and he makes the elliptical Chamber Symphony directly communicative. His Tampere players acquit themselves with honour and the recording is detailed and full. Jim Samson contributes a perceptive booklet note. If you don't know this wonderful music, you should deny yourself that pleasure no longer. --Martin Anderson, International Record Review

The Tampere players seem to relish repertoire that sounds both familiar and unfamiliar. Hannu Lintu directs sympathetic performances… This one's recommended. --Guy Rickards, Gramophone

At once cosmopolitan and nostalgically Romanian, [The Chamber Symphony] is a little masterpiece. 4*/4* --Calum MacDonald, BBC Music Magazine

Enescu is one of music's problem childs. He has not made ''it easy for the listeners, as Richard Strauss did. No flattery, nor simple lines with spiced repetitive melodies. But still feels the music strong and direct. I would say genious in almost every bar. Lintu have the feeling for this, handles the structures with openness, exposing all the parts. Very impressive interpretation.

Excellent! 17 Oct. 2012

Excellent CD!The Chamber Symphony is in my opinion Enescu's best(and last) symphonic work.It moves somehow at the borders between neoclassic and post-avantgarde.I believe that Silvestri's interpretation is still the reference, but I find Lintu's approach most interesting. The second symphony is equally well interpreted.Highly recommended!
