Book Description

Born on the flying city of Newton, Pirian Horncastle has always felt the weight of the Erth pulling him towards his destiny. He and his parents are among the very few inhabitants who remain free of the 'Dosage' - a controlling drug that turns most of the population into psychopaths.

When Pirian's father, Jeradon Horncastle, is falsely accused for the murder of their Emperor, both are outcast into the raging seas below. Washed ashore, they are brought to the attention of the Rojin, a spiritual people who Jeradon had once slaughtered. But in a twist of prophecy, their enemy and his son hold the fate of the Rojin people and the very soul of their immortal leader in the palm of their hands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic debut, 4 May 2009
This review is from: The Enemy's Son: Erth Chronicles Book I (Paperback)
I will soon be reading this book for a 4th time. After choosing some books to read with my kids, this made it into the pile along with Terry Pratchett and The Hobbit.

The Enemy's Son is a great addition to the fantasy genre. The characters and places are so well written, you cannot help but connect with them and visualise them. It is no wonder so many artists have chosen to bring the story and characters to life on the erthchronicles website.

The Horncastles, as well as the rest of the characters, will lead you through a story you find difficult to put down. It really was a pleasure to read and re-read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Sci-Fi Fantasy kids SHOULD be reading., 30 April 2009
This review is from: The Enemy's Son: Erth Chronicles Book I (Paperback)
I really don't want to compare this to Harry Potter because it's an entirely different beast all together, but if kids are going to be reading fantasy then they should be looking in the direction of something considerably more imaginative. The Enemy's Son is just such a book.

Where James Johnson really succeeds is is his exception skills as a world-builder. There's plenty of archetypes but reconfigured. It feels familiar and fresh at the same time, and rattles along at a hell of a rate - floating cities, difficult themes (drugs and their effects are central), broadly painted likable characters with less likable histories, and all wrapped in a kind of cleverly conceived puzzle. Johnson drops tantalizing clues to something bigger unfolding behind the action. It's clear he already knows the end of his story such is the meticulous nature of the world he's created.

This is great writing for young adults and adults alike. An engrossing, energetic romp!
