5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Friend in Fighting the Enemy, 30 Jun 2004
By Gwilym Davies "kaiser_gwil" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of the most helpful books I have read for a long time on personal holiness, and particularly on indwelling sin and how to fight it. Lundgaard claims to have dragged John Owen kicking and screaming into the twentieth century, which will be a great relief to anyone who has ever tried to read the almost impenetrably deep prose of the great English theologian.

Not only is this book very readable, it is also very challenging. As I read about the ongoing fight with sin and the tactics it uses I felt as if I myself were the case study under the microscope. I was ashamed at how easily I had given in to the continuing assaults of sin in my life up to now, and galvanised to take the fight to my sin in the future.

I suspect that far too many Christians know far too little about the powerful hold sin continues to have on their life - and failing to know their enemy they spectacularly fail to fight it. It is time we educated ourselves about our own deceitful hearts, and got busy fighting them. I wholeheartedly recommend this book as a thoughtful, thoroughly biblical, and highly perceptive call to arms in the fight against the enemy within.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful insepction of the overlooked enemy - our own Sin, 29 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The christian has three enemies. The world, the devil, and the flesh(our sinful desire). Too often we recieve teaching that completely leaves out our flesh. Such omission brings unrealistic expectations and methods in the struggle to put to death daily the flesh.

Kris draws on Owens in an easy to follow literary style. The questions at the end of each chapter make the book suitable for daily or semi-daily devotion. In fact the real impact of the book is in putting the ideas into practice. This requires the work of God in the heart through prayer and scripture. Kris is helpful in leading us to this work of faith in our lives.

The book spends much time dealing with the enemy, so it would be of benifit to read quickly through the book in one or two sittings to get a feel for where all of this talk about the flesh is leading in terms of Christ the victor. Otherwise you might find yourslef talking for weeks about sin is this and sin is this and what are we supposed to do about it anyway?... -chip

5.0 out of 5 stars Sin is more than sins, 9 April 2006
By G. J. Weeks (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
John Owen on The Mortification of Sin and Indwelling Sin in Believers are great books but only readable by those prepared to do battle with the prolixity of the greatest English 17th century theologian. Owen is great but hard going.

Lundgaard has done a great job in bringing such deep teaching on sin into the present day. Here is strong meat as easy to digest as milk. The literary illustrations may be a bit over the pond at times, but they are very effective.

The book is enhanced by questions for study and meditation following every chapter. Probably the best book I have read on what sin is and how it is to be defeated. It is more than thoughts, words or deeds. It is man's alienation from the God who is there. Its origin is from man's beginning. It affects all of life. It can be defeated only in Christ.

Read this book, then try Owen himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as scary as the title sounds
An encouraging, motivating book that doesn't hide from the serious subject matter but manages to do it in a way that leaves you feeling anything other than defeated.
