Product Description

All 13 episodes from series one of the TV drama portraying the daily life of Channel islanders under German occupation during WWII. As the only British territory to be occupied by the Nazi regime during WWII, the Channel Islands represented a glimpse of what life in Britain could have been like if Germany had won the war. Blending archive footage with contemporary film techniques, the series achieved a gritty realism that went a long way to recreating the fear and uncertainty endemic in the population at the time. Episodes comprise: 'By Order of the Fuhrer', 'The Librarian', 'After the Ball', 'Steel Hand from the Sea', 'The Laws and Usages of War', 'V for Victory', 'The Polish Affaire', 'Officers of the Law', 'The Jerry Bag', 'Treason', 'Pains and Penalties', 'The Prussian Officer' and 'Judgement of Solomon'.

4.0 out of 5 stars The realities of occupation. 7 Oct 2008
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a top quality drama about the German occupation of the Channel Island of Guernsey during World War II. It deals with the day to day realities of co-existence with the enemy.
At times this is a bleak and brutal series with issues such as rape, harsh military justice (meted out to both sides) and isolation. It is extremely well written and acted, particularly by the always excellent Alfred Burke (check out the series 'Public Eye' and watch Burke's superb portrayal of Enquiry Agent Frank Marker) as island commandant Major Richter. Simon Cadell as the devious and thoroughly unpleasant SS officer and John Malcolm as the head of the German Police Force are particularly good.
This series' best features are its accuracy and honesty; you get the impression this is how people on both sides WOULD react in these circumstances. Very highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1978 and all that 29 Jan 2009
Format:DVD
This maybe a war-time drama, but for us half the enjoyment was reliving the first time we watched it - in 1978. The stories are gritty and balanced, and overall it was excellent, particularly considering it was made nearly 30 years ago. We will now buy the second series.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT 7 April 2013

Already had series 2. Decided to buy series 1. My husband can't put it down! it must be good. Shame there is no real conclusion to the series though.
