Synopsis
ENEMY AT THE DOOR was a British television series with a short life, but one that is long remembered. The groundbreaking series portrays the fear and confusion felt by the residents of the Channel Islands during the Nazi occupation in WWII. Using archival footage and a 1940s cinematography style, the drama utilises both harsh realism and stylised filmmaking techniques. The gifted cast includes Alfred Burke and Simon Cadell. Features the complete second series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat, 10 Jun 2008

The Seventies to early Eighties = the high point of British TV drama. We were offered a near continual stream of excellent, thought provoking drama during that decade that (sartorially) taste forgot. Enemy at the Door was a short lived but very distinguished part of that stream.
History themed dramas didn't have to be particularly relevant to the contemporary times. What they relied on was an avoidance of cliche, a lack of scene stealing actors (i.e. professional, but charismatic ones) and unexpected, dilemma strewn plots.
Don't worry about slow paced editing - with scripts and performances as good as this, that simply accentuates what you're witnessing.

Without doubt one of the best TV series I've ever watched, up there with Secret Army.Excellent plots along with great acting from so many of the cast.I would definately recommend this to people with an interest of WW2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow paced but rivetting drama., 27 May 2008
By Bobby Smith (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Oft compared, in style at least, to 'Secret Army'. 'Enemy at the door' knows it cannot better the plots of 'Secret Army' and so sticks to the matters it deals with best; the stiffiness of the local/German interaction and the friction caused by Reinecke (SS) and Oberst Richter (Wehrmacht). The result is an interesting series that touches on many of the issues caused by war: questions of loyalty, resistance and moral superiority.
What I should also mention is the superb level of acting throughout the series, truly memorable performances between Dr Martel and Oberst Richter, the grumpy Kluge and the dastardly Reinecke (my wife swore at him every time he came on the screen!) In short, a thought provoking, intelligent series.
