Book Description

3 April 2011

Enduring Success investigates a key question in business today: how can companies succeed over time? Based on a six-year study of some of Europe's oldest and most stellar companies, targeting nine that have survived for more than 100 years, it analyses why these companies have significantly outperformed the market over the past fifty years and reveals the secrets of enduring greatness.

Half of the Fortune Global 500 companies that are 100 years old or older can be found in Europe, as can 72 of the 100 oldest family businesses in the world. Enduring Success investigates the strategies that they have implemented and the nature of the leadership of these organizations, revealing that the greatest companies adapt to a constantly changing environment.

Enduring Success provides practical advice grounded in research and best practice for business leaders who can learn from the history of some of the world's greatest institutions including AEG, Allianz, Ciments Français, Ericsson, Glaxo, HSBC, Lafarge, Legal & General, Nokia, Munich Re, Shell, Prudential, and Siemens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good research, genuine surprises 28 Jun 2012

I came to this book doing some research into the value of innovation in helping a company to thrive and survive. A few chapters in, and I confess to having some preconceptions blown away. If you want your company to survive 100 years or more (as the nine examples here have) it's not all about being nimble and innovative - far from it. The research is sound (Stadler is helpfully clear about the difficulities and limitations of comparing corporate success over time and between sectors) and the way conclusions are grouped with particular examplars is helpful. It is research and not bedtime readng, but the vignettes from company history are nonetheless excellent and, at their best, feel very much like the insider view.
