Product Description

A moving and tender meditation on loving, living and dying by one of the greatest Anglican spiritual writers. Michael Mayne, author of three of the best-selling spirituality titles of recent years, Learning to Dance, Pray, Love, Remember, and A Year Lost And Found, set out to complete a final book that would tackle the linked questions of what is the solid ground of a belief which for him has proved authentic and survived into old age, and how ageing may affect us physically, mentally and spiritually. On completing it, he discovered that he was suffering from cancer of the jaw, and in a nine-month journal he reflects (among much else) on whether his faith stands firm, and where God may be found in the challenging country of cancer. The Enduring Melody is a moving and tender meditation on loving, living and dying by one of the greatest living Anglican spiritual writers. Michael Mayne is the former head of religious programmes at the BBC and Dean Emeritus of Westminster.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most human and humane writers 20 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
A beautifully insightful book where we see the possibility of a human existence; as if Michael knew something we only glimpse as we're not prepared to stop like he did and listen to nature, others and ourselves. A rare work that deserves huge attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Journey 11 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is an inspiration. A brave man tells his story of pain in the light of faith. I have since learned that even without any great suffering, there is a lot of help to be had from keeping a spiritual journal as opposed to a diary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-enhancing 15 May 2013
By AE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It has taken me an unusually long time to read The Enduring Melody, this is because every page is packed with thought-provoking prose and references to other beautiful poems and writings. After a few pages I cannot but stop and think on the profound and beautiful perspectives he shares. The book began its life as a private journal and is presented as such, so the journey is chronological. A friend lent me her copy, and by the time I was half-way through I had ordered three books - one to keep and two to give away.

The book is about Michael's journey through cancer and his faith in Christ is woven through every thought. Michael's faith as expressed is wholly inclusive and utterly life-enhancing. Yes, Yes, Yes !

I take comfort from the fact that in our prayer life what matters is that a bit of me knows that there is within, deeper than all the occasional doubts and constant distractions, a cantus firmus, an awareness of and longing for the love of God as I have glimpsed it in those rare life-affirming moments (and will again). "e;
