Product Description

Product Description

Changes to regulations for sports car racing in the late 1970s paved the way for a golden era of endurance racing in the 80s, with the likes of Porsche, Lancia, Jaguar and Mercedes all vying for the World Sportscar Championship. The Silverstone 6-Hour and 1000km races became a cornerstone of this championship and the event was often used by the teams as a warm-up to the all important Le Mans 24-Hour race, which followed it on the calendar. This book charts the progress of the races, year-by-year from 1976, through the era of the Group C cars, up to the end of the eighties, with previously unpublished accounts and photographs of each event. It includes maps of the circuit, showing changes over the years and detailed results from each of the races. As an ordinary spectator, Chas Parker visited each of the events (except one) over the years, and amassed an impressive collection of colour transparencies taken from the spectator enclosures, the paddock, and during pits walkabouts.

About the Author

Chas Parker is a motorsport writer who started his working life in the field of astronomy, as press officer for the Royal Greenwich Observatory. During this time he obtained a degree in mathematics and physics from the Open University. He has contributed to the Philips Encyclopaedia of Astronomy and Patrick Moore's Yearbook of Astronomy. His main interest, however, is motor racing, and he spent many years taking photographs at different racing circuits around the UK, amassing a collection of many thousands of colour transparencies. For some time he has worked as a sub-editor for Motorsport News, and he also reports on events such as the Goodwood Revival meeting and Festival of Speed. Endurance Racing at Silverstone in the 70s & 80s is his fourth book.

Great memories 28 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This follows the pattern for the 'Those were The Days' series by being written by a real fan and including many photographs taken by the author at the events he writes about - see also the book about Birmingham Superprix.

This book brought back many memories for me. I had just got into F1 when my dad took me, with some trepidation, to the 1984 World Sportscar event at Silverstone. He needn't have worried - I was hooked and have been attending sportscar events at Silverstone and Donnington (alas!) ever since.

This book clearly hit the right note for me - mainly as a momento of those times. The book may not have the professional stamp in terms of layout, photography and journalism. And I read it in one short sitting - there is not much text. However, it is written by someone with real passion for the subject and that counts for a lot.

Good record of those classic sportscar races in a compact book
Top six and class winner results section Photography is good
(the authors own)but too many are cropped to fit the pages.
