More About the Author

Chas Parker swapped a career in astronomy, where he was press officer for the Royal Greenwich Observatory, for one writing about motorsport, via a brief time editing a computer magazine. He was motoring correspondent for 'Sussex Life' magazine for a time and in recent years has worked as a freelance sub-editor and occasional contributor on publications such as 'Autosport' 'Motorsport News' and 'Motor Sport' magazine. He has also written regular blogs for motoring websites.

He is the author of five books - Motor Racing at Brands Hatch in the seventies (Veloce, 2004); Brands Hatch - the definitive history of Britain's best-loved motor racing circuit - foreword by Bernie Ecclestone (Haynes, 2008); Motor Racing at Brands Hatch in the eighties (Veloce, 2009); Endurance Racing at Silverstone in the 1970s & 1980s (Veloce, 2010); Silverstone - the Home of British Motor Racing - foreword by David Coulthard (Haynes, 2013).

He lives in East Sussex.

Product Description

Review

"It spans the glory days of BMW 'Batmobiles' and Porsche 935s to the awesome grids of Group C. It's written by Chas Parker, who took nearly all of the great photographs, too." - Classic & Sports Car"Another in Veloce's prolific 'Those were the days ...' series, this is almost like reminiscing about a bunch of great races with a mate. Rather than being a professional journalist, Parker's an enthusiastic knowledgeable amateur and a pretty good photographer. Both of these characteristics show through in the book." - Thoroughbred and Classic Car Owners Club

About the Author

Chas Parker is a motorsport writer who started his working life in the field of astronomy, as press officer for the Royal Greenwich Observatory. During this time he obtained a degree in mathematics and physics from the Open University. He has contributed to the Philips Encyclopaedia of Astronomy and Patrick Moore's Yearbook of Astronomy. His main interest, however, is motor racing, and he spent many years taking photographs at different racing circuits around the UK, amassing a collection of many thousands of colour transparencies. For some time he has worked as a sub-editor for Motorsport News, and he also reports on events such as the Goodwood Revival meeting and Festival of Speed. Endurance Racing at Silverstone in the 70s & 80s is his fourth book.

This follows the pattern for the 'Those were The Days' series by being written by a real fan and including many photographs taken by the author at the events he writes about - see also the book about Birmingham Superprix.

This book brought back many memories for me. I had just got into F1 when my dad took me, with some trepidation, to the 1984 World Sportscar event at Silverstone. He needn't have worried - I was hooked and have been attending sportscar events at Silverstone and Donnington (alas!) ever since.

This book clearly hit the right note for me - mainly as a momento of those times. The book may not have the professional stamp in terms of layout, photography and journalism. And I read it in one short sitting - there is not much text. However, it is written by someone with real passion for the subject and that counts for a lot.
