To bean Explorer or even to accompany an expedition to some rarely seen part of the planet is quite likely a dream of most of us. From previous generation books we had Richard Halliburton (January 9, 1900 - presumed dead after March 24, 1939) take us to those places in a way that we thought impossible to replicate. But here in his book TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH: ADVENTURES OF AN EXPEDITION PHOTOGRAPHER Gordon Wiltsie documents his numerous perilous adventures, comments on the difficulties of his expeditions, and best of all, provides us with some of the most magnificent photographs of those parts of the planet we can only imagine.
Wiltsie takes us to Nepal, Chile, Mongolia, Peru, the Arctic as well as the Antarctica, and Patagonia, courtesy of his inordinately magnificent photographs. His ability to find the right moment when the sun hits ice just so, when the clouds attempt to shroud peaks, the intimate images of Tibetan monks, Hindu pilgrims nearly suspended in air as they cross rocky mountain peaks - all with an extraordinary sense of artful composition that makes his photographs true works of art. His book represents nearly thirty years of accompanying daring explorers and his commentary about these expeditions is illuminating.
But the glory of this book is the sheer beauty of his photographic art infused with his sense of daring - the gift of one who has seen the unseeable and sharing those moments and images with we dreamers. July 11
