A Well Deserved Homage to Bruce Brown!, 23 Jan 2002
Christian's review of this movie isn't strictly true. The Endless Summer II starring Pat and Wingnut is a different movie altogether. The Endless Summer Revisited is a documentary on the phenomenon that is the Endless Summer movies.Using home movie footage, footage from Bruce's earlier surf films, takes and outakes from "the Endless Summer" and the "the Endless Summer II" Bruce Brown's son, Dana Brown, has put together a fitting tribute to Bruce Brown, his films and the pioneering days of his band of Californian surfing compatriates. This film contains some excellent vintage surfing footage as well as testaments from the likes of Dale Velzy, Greg Noll, Mike Doyle, Robert August, Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, Pat O'Connell to name but a few. Through this one piece of work you get to know how Bruce started out making surf films and went about delivering them to a sometimes hostile audience. Bruce also explains how he accidentally arrived at the concept of the Endless Summer and his P.R guy, R.Paul Allen, describes how sold the film around the U.S.A and the trials involved in getting interest from major film distributors. The second part of the film details the making of the Endless Summer II, and how different it was making the sequal to making the original. And the film closes with everyone agreeing on what a good egg Bruce is! If you love surfing and Bruce Brown's surf movies you'll love this this film. I'm afraid I couldn't give it full marks though, as it dispells some of the escapism of the early movies. WARNING: Watching this film will make you want to watch the Endless Summer films immediately!
