Biography

Leo Sayer (born Gerard Sayer) had a string of highly polished mainstream pop hits in the late '70s. Sayer began his musical career as the leader of the London-based Terraplane Blues Band in the late '60s. He formed Patches with drummer Dave Courtney in 1971; Courtney used to play with British pop star Adam Faith. Faith was beginning a management career in the early '70s, so ... Leo first achieved success as a songwriter when Roger Daltrey had a top five hit in 1973 with Giving it all away, co-written by Leo. He soon got a recording contract and released a single (Why is everybody going home) that flopped and is not included here.
Leo entered the UK charts at end of 1973 with his second single, The show must go on, which made number two in the UK. Three Dog Night covered the song and had an American hit with it so Leo's original was not released in America. Leo's next single, One man band, made the UK top ten while Three Dog Night covered the song for the American market. I guess this was sweet revenge for American artists, who had so often seen their songs covered by British artists in the sixties. While it may have been frustrating for Leo, it did at least prove that his song appealed to American record buyers and may have helped to create awareness of him in the industry.
Leo made the UK top five with Long tall glasses, which finally gave him an American hit of his own. His next single, Moonlighting, made number two in the UK. There was a gap of several months (during which I think there was a failed single) before You make me feel like dancing returned Leo to the UK charts - it also made number two in the UK and went on to sell a million copies in America, where it made number one.
Leo finally had a UK number one with When I need you, which became his second American number one. It now seemed that Leo was on a roll but history shows that this was the pinnacle of Leo's career. He made the UK top ten four more times, with How much love, I can't stop loving you though I try, More than I can say (a cover of the Bobby Vee that gave Leo his fourth UK number two hit) and Have you ever been in love.

If you're of the age to know the name of Leo Sayer and you're here reading this, then look no further for an excellent compilation of what really is his Best and Essential music.
Being one of those who was around when he actually had these hits, and saw them in the Charts, then I cannot recommend this compilation strongly enough. But you may be one of his latter-day fans, here on the strength of his magnificent 'Thunder In Your Heart' track, which brought him back to a name on everyone's lips via a TV advert; then I recommend you carry on and buy this CD, because you most certainly won't be disappointed by any of the other 19 tracks.
Leo Sayer is not only a wonderful tunesmith, he is also an excellent wordsmith, and his lyrics are rather edifying to listen to closely as well. 'Orchard Road' has always been a distinct favourite of mine, not only for the intensely but moving and atmospheric keyboards music, but also the amazing pictures Leo puts inside ones' head with such fabulous lyrics as these.
'Moonlighting' is another one, and was the single, really, which actually made him hit the big time. Again, another beautiful set of lyrics telling the story of a couple eloping to Gretna Green, which struck a chord with the record buying public, and made him a HUGE household name.
Honestly, you cannot go wrong with this CD, and you will probably enjoy it enough to feel the need to buy some of his regular albums afterwards, he is an addictive chap, is Leo.

The first single to feature Leo Sayer was by a group called Patches (Tell Tale on the Bradleys Barn label) but once he'd appeared on Top Of The Pops he was actually 2 different people-the first was as a clown the second was what he really looked like with each single totally different
His U S career kicked off with Long Tall Glasses as the first hit The Show Must Go On-on which he actually sings "I won't let the show go on" was covered by the 3 Dog Night while his original was never issued there. Its unlikely America saw him as a clown at the time but nowadays anybody can with You Tube
Mainly Sayer was a singer songwriter who collaborated with others but he did his share of covers like the Crickets/Bobby Vee hit More than I can say
At one time in the 80s when Sayer was out of favor car boots were full of his albums but that's not a reflection on him it was the same with David Essex,Alvin Stardust,Showaddywaddy and most pop albums of the 70s which had been pressed in disproportunate amounts

This CD is what I have been looking for, it has all the great songs people know and a few which were less familiar to me, as I am a casual Leo Sayer fan. If you are looking for a CD with all the Hits, look no further. The songs are as great as ever!

Endless Journey The Essential Leo Sayer is an excellent compilation containing his UK chart hit singles like "When I Need You",Orchard Road",I Can't Stop Loving You","Heart Stop Beating In Time","The Show Must Go On","Living In A Fantasy","Thunder In My Heart" and "More Than I Can Say".It contains a very good selection of his hit singles but it is a shame that the excellent single "Once In A While" was not a hit as this is not included here or on any other compilation CD Album by him apart from "Singles A's And B's which I also have.
