Biography

Doomsday scenarios are often predictive about an ending in life, revealing just what would occur if the world pushed itself to the brink of extinction. And the term “endgame” typically parallels such thinking, often evoking concepts of finality or termination.

But for Rise Against, this particular endgame might just be their beginning.

BBC Review

Perhaps the fundamental question when it comes to modern punk rock is this: what exactly is the artist intending to achieve? Usually, it’s one of two things – either to question authority and at least to attempt to unnerve the ruling class, or else it’s simply to play pop songs at a speed in contravention of sensible limits.

To their credit, Chicago’s Rise Against manage to place a foot in both of these camps. The ominously titled Endgame, the group’s sixth album in 10 years, is a muscular collection of high-energy punk that, amid the flurry, manages to display a level of high-mindedness that is becoming increasingly rare. The sound of the suburban middle-class, too often this is a genre the narrative concerns of which have become colloquial, even mundane; as if the fact that in the past few years the great institutions of state have appeared no more secure than a secret in a soap opera is nothing compared to the concerns of getting a date, or getting even with someone you dated once upon a time. With topics ranging from the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to the perceived unravelling of the American body politic, if nothing else at least Rise Against have a view of their country that extends beyond the boundary of a white picket fence.

Even so, while Endgame is a strong album, and certainly an honourable one, it does lack an ingredient that might be identified as magic. The problem with playing songs twice as fast as the average is that these songs last only half as long. By such a measure, the 12 compositions featured here should be out of the listener’s hair in less than 25 minutes. As it is, in the name of progression Rise Against have stretched things out a bit, meaning some of the selections here do overstay their welcome by about a minute and a half. That the essence of these songs is usually as strong as the identity of the band that wrote them means that no great harm is done. Even so, Endgame is not quite as short, or sharp, or shocking as it otherwise might have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible 22 Mar 2011

This is quite simply Rise Against at its best. A truly amazing album, strong all the way through. My personal favourites are, satellite (my favourite song on the album) and endgame. Seriously, buy this album

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of 2011 26 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
I've never really listened to Rise Against in the past and I'm not usually a fan of political punk, but this CD is seriously good. It reminds me of the Offspring in places (and I used to love that band).

It's been played on the stereo at work at lot and it only took a couple of listens for me to get into it - it's pretty easily listening. Whether you're a fan of the band or not, you won't regret checking it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album! 16 Jun 2012
By Drakos
Format:Audio CD
Rise Against being my favourite band. I instantly bought this the day it was released. An I gotta say... it's probably my favourite album by Rise Against yet! So many great songs from End game to my favourite on the album which is 'Wait for me'
What I truly love about Rise Against is that their songs have meaning, they teach us and show us about the worlds problems that many are too blind to see. Which made me love them. I also love the front cover of the album, one of the many but personally, this cover is my favourite out of them all.

A MUST buy for Rise Against fans.

Now i'll be honest, i'm a pretty big Rise Against fan, owning the second album and every album onwards.
This being thier 6th album the band has changed a lot over the years.
What I can say is Rise Against have always had a strong message and in this album the message seems even bigger and darker than it ever has been.
A strange twist to this album is that, rather than being mixed up with crazy ambitious songs which can cause the song's meaning to get lost, it focuses on emotion and lyrical content. The vocals seem louder and the solid rock and punk sound of the album really pushes this out.
This album is artists expressing their message in a way they never have before.
Best tracks to me are Midnight Hands, Survivor Guilt, Broken Mirrors, Disparity by Design and Wait for me.

If you like rock or metal I definitely recommend this album, though it may be worth listening to some songs first so you really know what you are buying.

It's strange, I have a friend who's a fan of R&B, and then he liked over half of this metal album, so I believe that there is something here for everyone.

I wouldn't recommend this over some of the band's previous albums such as The sufferer and the witness, though if you want to look into this band their second, fourth or sixth albums are a good place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 15 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
Ive been a fan since Revolutions Per Minute and yes they've grown and changed as a band but with Endgame they are back to their best in my opinion. The songs are not as fast or as short as some older tracks but still have brilliant jump along tunes mixed with incredible lyrics. It is a certain grower if you cant get into it much at first. Stand out tracks are Architects, Broken Mirrors, Wait For Me and This Is Letting Go, which I just cant stop playing and singing along to at the top of my lungs. Overall a brilliant album after the slight disappointment of Appeal To Reason.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid but unspectacular 22 Mar 2011
By Rooster
Format:Audio CD
I love Rise Against. I own all of their albums and am listening to them all constantly, therefore when I heard about Endgame I pre-ordered it straight away. I had listened to Help Is On The Way on their website and was perhaps a little disappointed with the obvious poppiness of the track. I am a fan of Appeal to Reason, yet am more inclined to the previous heavier albums and was therefore rather disappointed with this 6th album.

The lyrics are clunky, often repetitive and focus much more upon being anthemic rather than focusing on the passion behind the messages that Tim Mcilrath and co obviously believe so strongly in. Songs such as Make It Stop, This Is Letting Go and Wait For Me are average at best focusing strongly upon the catchiness of the tune often with clunky sounding lyrics: "She asked why, I said I don't know why, I just know". This is rather disappointing from what is a band that rarely produces a song that I will not listen to on repeat.

Another grating issue that I have with this album in particular is the backing vocals. Effectively all of the songs have "WooooOOOOoooooOOOoooo" in the background, providing no extra affect to the song at all. Matt Skiba, of Alkaline Trio, is credited on Midnight Hands and I was excited to hear Matt and Tim combine their vocals, yet there is nothing but "woooOOooooOooo".

All in all a solid but unspectacular 6th album from Rise Against. I hope next time they return more to their punk roots, shorten some of the songs, and get rid of the annoying backing vocals!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Grower With A Clear Message 20 Mar 2011
Format:MP3 Download
I've not been a fan of Rise Against long (getting into them in about 2008 when Savior came out), but I'd consider myself to be quite a big one, so I bought this album on complete faith, without reading any reviews or hanging back to wait for the album's reception. When I heard it, my first impression was "This is good, but it is not as good as Appeal To Reason" However, it is a grower, and now after hearing it a fair few times (About 16 in all, because I had it on repeat on my Xbox 360 whilst I was playing) I regard it as being on a par with ATR and the Sufferer. Though the message that Rise Against strive to convey was stronger in Endgame than any of it's predecessors, it was not delivered in such a catchy way. Also Endgame was missing an acoustic track (I'm a big fan of Hero Of War and Swing Life Away) which was disappointing. Though some of the tracks in ATR were not exactly conveying the message (like Kotov Syndrome) they were a welcome break from some of the heavier tracks, and Endgame doesn't have any breaks, and the message gets a bit overwhelming at points. I noticed a couple of tracks that seemed to be tributes, the intro to Make It Stop (September's Children) sounds like the intro to Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day, and the intro to Disparity By Design sounded very much like Collapse (Post-Amerika) from ATR (not strictly a tribute but more of a failure on Rise Against's part). Another point I'd like to make is that they seemed to go back to the formula they last used in The Unraveling, which is to make every track about the same length, except this time they added a couple of minutes, so every track was in the middle to latter half of three minutes, as apposed to in the middle to latter half of one minute....
