DVD Description

Set in 1965, the story follows the hunt for a missing school girl which draws Endeavour Morse to the place which will ultimately shape and define his destiny--Oxford. Deep in full-blown murder investigation and led by Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, Endeavour finds himself side-lined, discredited and at a dead end. Facing down the demons of his past, Endeavour begins his own quest in pursuit of justice, risking all in the hunt for a truth that will haunt him for the rest of his days.

“Morse as a young man is a wonderful character that I’m very excited to be playing… we can compliment what’s come before, by telling a great story, and telling it well”--Shaun Evans

Shaun Evans plays Morse with his own style, never once did i think he was doing an impersonation of John Thaw, but little inferences in his performance payed due homage to John and also gave us definition and clarity to Morse the human being.
Strongly supported by a great cast, we even see Morse giving his future Jaguar MK II a glance over.
I wasn't prepared to be so overcome with emotion when we see John Thaw's reflection in a mirror near the end, but it summed up how i felt about this prequel, it reflected the things i love about Morse as a whole, Oxford, Morse character, the music, the whole essence.
I'm pleased the makers didn't fall into the trap of trying too hard to copy and repeat things, instead we get a prequel that could run and run, but also a fitting tribute to a much loved and much missed character.

What was shown on the DVD was very good and much enjoyed. HOWEVER after watching the 88 minute DVD both of us realised how much subplot was not shown, another reviewer has listed most of them but I think has missed the oily little detective being told to get out as he's not wanted in that Division any longer. I was really disappointed to hsve so much cut out and noticed similar cuts in the "Case Historied" series DVD. Is it too much to expect that we get what we think we've ordered - the complete episode!!!

I watched this on the TV and it was very good - just like watching Morse work out the twists of the case. When I bought the DVD and watched it, I was shocked to see that parts of it were missing.

1. Dempsey developing photographs in a darkroom.
2. Crisp's daugher going to the car showroom to see the mechanic.
3 Morse and Thursay breaking into the large house and meeting Dempsey.
4. After Morse gave Crisp his resignation letter, the Sargent was talking to Morse in the corridor and said he done him a favour getting tranfered to Vice.
5. Dempsey taking a photograph of Morse.
6 Dempsey watching the Minister's house.
7 Dempsey giving the Minister the ultimatum to sign the resignation letter or get shot.

This all explained how the girl got the Minister's phone number on her hand and how he paid the consequences for his involvement in the sex party with underage girls.

This DVD shows that, in the 1960s, it was ok for politicians to have sex with Minors and get away with it, while the verison aired on TV clearly showed him paying the consequences.

Although not vital to the primary storyline, these ommisions leave unanswered questions and remove an importsnt sub-plot.

Perfect. Wonderfully quirky Morse. There is so much scope to learn of his early experiences, we are really excited that there may be more!

Is is possible to be so attached to a fictional character?
It was like that dream one often has of meeting someone who has since passed on. I bet I'm not the only one who shed a few tears at the last scene. Read more

Nice
This is trustworthy story of the beginning of the Morse career in Oxford. Nice period setting with all the Morse attributes included. Even worthwhile for the cars in the film. Read more

I loved this and am so glad they are going ahead with more episodes. I so missed Morse and while this is not the same, it is close.
