Book Description

5 Feb 2009

The remarkable story of Endal, voted ‘Dog of the Millennium’, and how, through his remarkable skills, companionship and unstinting devotion, he gave Allen Parton a reason to live again.

Allen Parton was seriously injured while serving in the Gulf War. He lost the use of both of his legs, plus all memories of his children and much of his marriage. He was left unable to walk, talk or write - isolated in his own world. After five years of intensive therapy and rehab, he was still angry, bitter and unable to talk. Until a chance encounter with a Labrador puppy - Endal - who had failed his training as an assistance dog on health grounds. They 'adopted' each other, and Endal became Allen's reason to communicate with the outside world, to come to terms with his injuries, and to want to live again. Not content with learning over 200 commands to help Allen complete everyday tasks like getting dressed and going out to the shops in his wheelchair, Endal gave Allen the ability to start living again, and to become a husband and father again in his own special way. This is the incredible story of Allen, his wife Sandra, and his family. And, of course, Endal.

About the Author

Allen Parton was serving in the Gulf War when an accident robbed him of the use of his legs and half of his long-term and short-term memory. After 5 years in hospital, he was still unable to walk, talk, read or write. It was only when he was partnered up with his Canine Partner, Endal, that he found the strength to learn to communicate with the world again. As his aide with everyday tasks, Endal allows Allen to lead an independent life. Endal has been given many awards, including the PDSA Gold Award and Dog of the Millenium award. Allen and Endal currently work with a number of animal and disability charities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful heartwarming story 1 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
I would highly recommend this book. It is a beautiful story of how one Golden Labrador gave his owner back his life. It made me laugh and it made me cry.
The book is written in chapters with the husband giving his version of the story in one chapter and his wife who also suffered throughout this traumatic time giving her version of the story.
Could not put this book down once i started it, and it only took a few days to read. If you dont normally buy this type of book i would say dont dismiss it, it is wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Endal 20 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
This is an amazing book that is very easy to read, but will draw out every emotion you possess through the intense sequence of events in Allen and Sandra's lives. By alternating between the perspectives of Allen and Sandra, you gain a balanced view of how illness and injury affects a marriage and ultimately the family unit .Endal as a canine seems to possess a unique ability to reach out and help humans, succeeding in areas that human communication and therapy failed .Endal's determined character and love for Allen is so inspirational that I have ordered four more copies of the book for relatives as it is a story that I believe brings hope and strength for everyone who reads it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anybody seen Endal? 19 Aug 2010
By Namnit
Format:Paperback
I kind of enjoyed the other partners perspective of accounts in the alternating chapters unlike some other reviewers of this book.

The dog, Endal doesnt make an appearnce until page 153 almost halfway through the book but this does not detract from an otherwise interseting account of the lives of these two people who have their lives turned upside down by such an unfortunate accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars PROUD TO HAVE MET ENDAL 28 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Couldn't wait to read this book as my Mum and I met Endal a few years ago.
I work alongside ex Navy personnel so was also interested in the first half of the book that details the trials that Allen had to go through prior to being matched up with Endal. When Endal appears it really warms the heart - can a dog be so intelligent and understanding - I believe so! What a feelgood end the book had - I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb, unsentimental account 3 Oct 2009
By Sue W.
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I already knew when I began reading this book that the dog would not get a mention until halfway through as I had read other reviews beforehand. Loved the photos in the middle, and the account of what happened, told by both the author and his wife in alternate chapters. Written in a matter of fact way without being sickly-sentimental or over-dramatic it had me hooked right from the first page and I actually read this book in one day inbetween the chores and throughout the evening. It's a long time since I enjoyed a book so much and I was sorry when I reached the end. The amazing bond that developed between the author and the dog and how the dog changed the author's life and made it worth living again, was heartwarming. I highly recommend this book!

Although Endel doesn't 'appear' in the book until about half-way through, it is worth the wait. This is about a family in crisis and how a great dog gave them back their lives. It also shows what our guys in the armed forces go through when they are injured. Even though they have either mental or physical disabilities, they (and their families) still have to jump through hoops a lot of the time to get what they are both legally and morally entitled to.

This isn't a soppy book, but it is a great example of how important animals are - something that is all too often forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring tale 24 Aug 2009
By Mimmi
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have just finished reading Endal and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dedication Endal had for his owner Allen is outstanding and goes to prove that a dog is really Mans best friend, although few will be as intelligent as Endal. I thought this book was very well and cleverly written with one chapter written by Allen and the next by his wife Sandra throughout the book which gave a perspective from both points of view. The book starts off before the accident explaining how Allen served in the Royal Navy and how he and Sandra met, it then moves on to the accident and tells both Allens struggle with coming to terms with the results of the accident and Sandras struggle trying to bring up two children and look after her Husband. Then came along Endal who gave Allen independance and learned him to love again. This book describes the work both Allen and Sandra have done and the appearances that Endal and Allen made. I wish I had known about Endal before this book, a true furry hero and I was saddened to hear he passed away earlier this year. He will always be remembered.
