Book Description

28 Mar 2008
Steve Blease had never done any serious walking in his life, so his decision to 'do End-to-End' - walk the 1,100 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats - was both brave and puzzling. What on earth was the point? Well, there were some attractions. See more of the country, sample as many of its local beers as possible and also raise money for the NSPCC. But best of all, just take off. Leave the worries and responsibilities behind. Steve gets lost twice before even leaving Land's End and it doesn't get any easier. But he's fuelled by best bitter and sustained by the generosity and humour of his travelling companions and the people he meets along the way. For anyone who has ever fancied a really long walk (but never quite managed to get round to it), End to End is an unfailingly humorous guide to what it's really like. Visit the website for photos from the journey, a map and an itinerary: www.landsendjohnogroats.co.uk

Throughout this book, I felt as if I was also allowed on Steve's journey on "LEJOG" and that I joined him practically every step of the way. His perception of people that he met and had to contend with were so sharp that your really felt as if you shouldn't really laugh out loud, but you couldn't help it.

He has a great sense of priority - tasting most beers possible, realising which side his bread is buttered on when his wife joined him for some of the walking and ensuring that his journey took him past (or under) some landmarks from his life.

I wouldn't normally buy a book about walking from Lands End to John O'Groats, but I'm very pleased that I bought and read this one. It really was well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Col's recommendation 24 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
While I don't agree with all Steve's views on football e.g. Mr Wenger, this is a very entertaining read, providing a light hearted insight into what undetaking a challenge like this is really like. Plus its for charity.....recommended.
