Amazon.co.uk Review
After a two-year hiatus that included recovery from heart surgery, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the big screen at the end of 1999 with End of Days, a Christmas turkey if ever there was one. Overcooked and bloated with stuffing, this ludicrous thriller attached itself to the end-of-the-millennium furore. The prologue begins in 1979 with panic in the Vatican when a comet signals the birth of a child who will, 20 years later, become the chosen bride of Satan, destined to conceive the devil's spawn between 11 p.m. and midnight on December 31, 1999. It's hard to decide who has the more thankless role--Robin Tunney as Satan's would-be bride, or Schwarzenegger as Jericho Cane, the burned-out alcoholic bodyguard assigned to protect the girl from Satan, billed as "The Man" and played with cheesy menace (and an inconsistent variety of metaphysical manifestations) by Gabriel Byrne.

With kitsch character names like Jericho and Chicago (Arnie's partner, played by Kevin Pollack) and lapses in logic that any five-year-old could spot, End of Days is a loud, aggravating movie that would be entertaining if it were intended as comedy. But Schwarzenegger and director Peter Hyams approach the story as an earnest tale of redemption and tested faith, delivering a ridiculous climax full of special effects and devoid of dramatic impact. You're left instead to savour the verbal and physical sparring between Satan and Jericho, resulting in the most thorough pummelling Schwarzenegger's ever endured on screen. Of course he eventually gets his payback, just in time for New Year's Eve. Perhaps he was touched by an angel? --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good film, 25 Jan 2005
By Mr "X" (Glasgow, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The story was quite original, filled with alot of great action sequences, the effects were good also. Gabriel Byrne obviously had a HELL of a good time acting as the man who played host to the Devil.

I thought Arnie was very good in his role as well - he showed his human acting side - he wasn't indestructible like he is in some films. I think for what Arnie does in his films his acting suits, so that may mean he's one of the best actors of our generation - who knows?

A very good film with 2 great lead performances and an emotional ending - worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than constantine!, 8 Aug 2005

(REAL NAME)
Wow, End of Days is an explosive treat with all the supernatural dazzle. Arnies character thrilled me as a good guy with a "black heart", you never really know what hes gonna do. Gabriel is perfectly cast as the cool sexy Mr. Satan. Polluk does his usual brillant acting. If you were dissapointed with Constantine then this is the film to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arnie at his very best, 22 Aug 2002
By "litelistener" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
When I first saw end of days I loved how the story evolved. Arnie is a cop who’s not at all happy in the beginning. He is almost suicidal in the first 20 minutes of the movie. What made the film so good is the darkness and the evil of the devil. We view the devil as this huge powerful monster in the movie which goes into the body of a Wall Street banker (Gabriel Byrne).
I was really impressed with Gabriel’s power and the way his devil character took over people.
Arnie definitely gives us the taste of battle. He puts up the biggest fight with this powerful creature and gives us the amazing feel of just pure Arnie. You’ll love his determination against the devil and how much he gets beat up trying to prevent the End of Days.
If the devil manages to make love before 1999 ends then the world will have evil cast over it. So our hero Arnie of course, not going to give up just because of the devil, gives his life to save the world.
The film has stunning special effects which are breathtaking. The massive explosions of fire, guns and so on are by far the best effects of the 90s in terms of Arnie movies. They even surpass the quality of T2 effects.

A 5 star masterpiece. Every DVD owner should have this for the amazing special effects and visual clarity. Also a good bunch of extras
