I couldn't wait to get hold of this book as I purchased Ms Withers tome 'Decorative Beads' many years ago and found it excellent.
I couldn't have been more disappointed. When buying from Amazon the only thing you have to go on is the cover pictures. The designs shown on the Encyclopedia of Wire jewellery are intricate and beautiful. Naturally, I thought you would be shown how to make them inside. However, five of the designs are not even Ms Withers' own work but are made by other artists and only appear in a design gallery at the back of the book. Even where techniques are explained, only basic details are given and the pretty variations shown are for illustrative purposes only. Yes, I appreciate that the author says you can use the techniques (and your own imagination) to progress beyond the basic skill level but, with all due respect, if I wanted to just puzzle over a picture and work things out for myself I don't need to buy the book! Any coverage, in picture form, of London Fashion Week would allow me to do the same! Something which describes itself as an 'Encyclopedia' should be more comprehensive. On top of which, the pictures are small and the wirework amateurish (some of the 's' clasps are so spindly I wonder if they would hold). I feel I have been misled and, if it hadn't been so cheap as to make returning it pointless, it would be winging its way back to Amazon right now! There are better books on the market so give this one a miss.
