Product Description

Product Description

With over 1000 entries and 400 illustrations, this volume is the most fact-packed history of the West ever assembled. Crime historian extraordinaire Jay Robert Nash has left no stone unturned in his search for the gunmen, train robbers, gangs, desperadoes, range warriors, gamblers, and lawmen that roamed the frontier. Contrary to popular myth, the Wild West was not a glamorous land where chivalry and courage were the custom and a man died with his boots on. It was a land of incredible hardshipsbrutal weather, hunger and disease, and the constant threat of violent death. Everyone carried a six-shooter, neutrality was impossible, and violence unavoidable; lawmen and outlaws lived side by side, and often there was no telling one from the other. Into this land came pioneers lured by promises of great fortunes, ex-Confederate soldiers embittered by the outcome of the war, greedy cattle barons, and merchant princes. It was truly an explosive mixture. Included in this volume are all the great Western legendsBilly the Kid, Jesse and Frank James, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Judge Roy Bean, Wild Bill Hickockand a host of lesser-known figures who, though they may have missed notoriety, were equally lethal. And while the West was very much a mans world, several women managed to shoot, steal, or gamble their way to fameincluding Belle Starr, Pearl Hart, and Calamity Jane. A compelling read, Encyclopedia of Western Lawmen & Outlaws will be the standard reference for years to come. In addition to alphabetical listings, it offers a glossary of lawmen and a glossary of outlaws, a magnificent photo and illustration appendix, and an extensive bibliography of books on the American West.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin (as they say), 2 Feb 2006

I wanted a book that told me in nice simple terms about all the cowboys I'd heard about but did not really know much about. This did all that and more. Lots of really interesting short tales all cross referenced. Great book, simple as that.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Who's Who/Where was What of the Old West., 17 Nov 2002
This is an exhaustive effort to capture the West in all its grandeur and mythology. On the latter point, Nash does much to expel myth and install truth in its place. Take his approach to the William H. Bonney legend: a killer is still a killer, regardless of context.

Comprehensively laid out in A-Z fashion, researchers of the Old West can navigate with ease in the search for that hitherto elusive figure. On the subject of research, Nash has painstakingly compiled this work from an eclectic array of sources. All the infamous settlements of the frontier like Coffeyville or Laramie are served up with flair and authenticity. Loaded with hundreds upon hundreds of photographs and litho drawings from the period, the reader becomes engrossed no matter what the subject read is. From casual fans who wish to check up on their nefarious heroes to academics wanting more than standard fare from an encycopedia, Nash keeps things concise but so alive that the pictures coming from the entries tell thousands of words.

In all, a portrait of the land emerges to remind readers that the American West was not a matter of automatic pianoes tinking away in smokey saloons, silver-spurred heroes twirling six-guns or desperadoes busting stolen bank safes open with TNT. It was about hardship - a sweaty, often diseased short life often made shorter by the reality of death by the gun, knife or arrow. The Old West happened for many good reasons - Nash reminds us that as we search we must approach it with respect and reverence.

A magisterial work that stands unequalled so far. Well done.
