Amazon.co.uk Review

The histories and mysteries of spirituality are thoroughly explored in this bountifully illustrated book. Author Timothy Freke has an outstanding track record for taking complicated topics and turning them into manageable and delightful books, as evidenced in previous works, such as The Illustrated Book of Sacred Scriptures and Zen Wisdom. The four-part format gives this book a solid organisation, starting with "Spiritual Traditions" and moving through "Spiritual Practices", "Spiritual Teachings, and "Information at a Glance". In each section Freke offers brief, expertly written essays, explaining everything from yoga's role in Hinduism to the spiritual use of psychedelic drugs. Every page is enhanced with stellar images and graphics, giving this encyclopaedia coffee table elegance. The overall vision behind this massive undertaking shines through as Freke opens the many doorways to God. Freke also explains numerous spiritual practices such as magic, sacred plants, repentance and vision quests. Although the subtitle promises life transformation, this could also be billed as a book that teaches readers the value of spiritual diversity on a global scale. When all is read and done, seekers will find themselves grateful that spirituality still thrives in so many unique arenas. --Gail Hudson

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing volume, almost spiritual!, 31 Aug 2003

(REAL NAME)
This book is pretty amazing, having never really ventured into any form of spiritual practice (Outside of catholic doctrination during childhood), I found this a real wake up call to the forms of spiritual expression out there. Its a good companion on your lifelong spiritual journey (It can be most useful as a push onto that path in the first place).

I was struck by how perfectly articulated it is, Freke does a very good job of explaining the different philosophies (and, interesting, how similar in many ways they are, particularly in goal), and each page feels filled with magic: the illustrations and frequent quotes and asides really add to the main prose.

A very good beginning point to find an expression of your own inate spirituality (Or discover the one you currently employ, are you a drug-taking clubber for example?).

What this book is not is a spiritual 'bible' :-) It is principally a beginning point but a very comprehensive one at that.

IMHO.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful for a beginner, 21 April 2003
A great book if you dont really know anything about spirituality and you want to learn about the many diffrent types of religion the world has to offer. Has exercises to point you in the right direction, but still is just a beginners book just covering the basics. You will probably find yourself buying your next book on a more specific subject.
