I bought this book as I wished to learn more about basic functions of my sewing machine and how I could improve stitches, insert concealed zips etc. This book concentrates on advanced sewing - quilting, embroidery, applique etc. It is not a book for someone wishing to learn about making clothes but someone who wishes to do craft work. I was very disappointed...

This book helped me make the most of the different stitches, feet and accessories for my sewing machine. I was even inspired to go out and buy more feet!
Format is around 2-5 pages on each technique, with a recipe format: Machine setup list includes: stitch, presser foot, needles, threads and tension. This is followed by recommended fabrics and additional supplies required. Clear instructions with photographs are provided, with a picture of the finished article at the end.
Similar inspiration for an overlocker: Serger Secrets, edited by Susan Huxley. Secrets for Successful Sewing is also very good, with tips for sewing machines and sergers - especially good advice on how to substitute different feet to create the same effect.

I borrowed a copy of this book from the library before deciding to buy.
It is an excellent resource and reference book for decorative, heirloom and other sewing techniques using a sewing machine, with a simple layout, understandable instructions and very clear photographs. Whilst it concerns techniques rather than projects, each technique has at least one photograph of the technique being used on a project. The content is not for beginners learning to sew, use a sewing machine or learning about dressmaking. As the title states it is a cache of techniques using a sewing machine to stitch many different structural and decorative effects. It is ideally suited for the intermediate or advanced stitcher interested in developing and making the most of using the sewing machine. It is up to the individual to choose when and how to apply the techniques.
This book would make a great gift for anyone interested in sewing.
