Product Description

Review

"Cogan has basically compiled the end-all, be-all list of punk bands you should know about...Basically it's the punk fan's holy bible." -"The Staten Island Advance"

Product Description

When people think of punk they often think of outrageous fashion and iconic bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols. But the reality of punk stretches over three decades and numerous countries, with a history as rich and varied as it is shocking and daring. With this lavishly illustrated and authoritative A-Z guide, now in a new format, Brian Cogan leads readers through the fiery history of a furious, rebellious, contradictory and boundary-redefining musical genre and cultural movement that remains as massively influential as it is wildly misunderstood. As The Encyclopedia of Punk clearly proves, punk music and culture has produced a rich trove of material, above and beyond the hundreds of bands, from books and films to incendiary political movements.

This book is amazing if your interested in the punk scene and the movements its taken. I study popular music and this book has been a god send for my assignments. It's got everything you need from the origins of punk to the present state of the scene. Not only does it have information on every band you NEED to know about it also has research on punk fashions, genres, labels and venues. The band profiles contains everything you nee to know from members, dates active, album releases and their story. Its bible size and is pretty much a bible for anyone interested in punk, also for the money you cant beat it!

Flawed 16 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is great big book filled with quite a bit of information and some good photos. The problem with it being the author being and based in the US is there is a lot of staggeringly glaring omissions, particularly regarding the UK scene along with too much concentration on US bands who really didn't need to be included.
It's a half decent stab at doing an encyclopedia of US punk but for covering the scene as a whole it doesn't deliver.

PUNK 13 Feb 2009

Gave this as a Christmas present to a real punk fan. He said it was great and that it contained a lot of info that he hadn't seen before. I was very surprised by its weight and size!
