I bought this book because i was just getting into gardening. I use it regularly to plan my border, as it has clear descriptions of the plants by genus, size, colour, and seasons they appear. I also find that children when they visit, love the photos of the plants and flowers.
I would reccomend if you or someone you are buying for, are starting to get into plants and flowers, and into gardening, this book is an excellent source for information. It has helped me plan what I buy in the way of plants - no more garden centre mistakes because i make a list of what I want to grow from seed or buy as plants, and this book enables me to do this.
Also, if a plant does not do well, this book describes for most plants, what conditions they need, so it can assist in problem solving, for the sucess of your garden.
Finally, when its deepest winter, I enjoy leafing through this book at the beautiful colour plates of flowers, remembering what the flowers of spring and summer look like!

The first thought that went through my mind when I was able to look at the book for the first time was - WOW!
It is a well written guide with pages and pages of beautiful pictures to get inspired by. And I found it very easy to read as well. The description and growing needs of every plant and flower is written in a simple to follow way.
This book has so much information on so many plants, I could keep myself easily entertained right up until mid-spring. Just in time for putting the information I learned into use!
I'm so happy to have bought this book, I am already looking into this author's past books on houseplants too.

Firstly I'm reviewing the 2006 edition.

Two-thirds glossy paper with lots of photographs, with expanded sections on common families, and the remaining 1/3 plain given over to the Plant Dictionary and glossary. Well laid-out introductory sections with good explanations and lots of beautiful colour photography, making identification and comparison easy. Sections include:
Preface
How to use the book
Plant names and origins
Colour in the garden
Plant Selector
Plant Catalogue
Plant Dictionary including common names
Glossary

The Plant Catalogue is divided into the following sections:
Trees
Shrubs
Roses
Climbers
Perennials
Annuals & Biennials
Rock plants
Bulbs
Water plants
Cacti and other succulents.

Each section includes easy-to-understand explanations about classification and identification, etc. The Plant Dictionary is a complete listing of more than 8000 plants suitable for growing in temperate gardens worldwide. It includes full descriptions of the characteristics and cultivation of over 4000 plants not already covered in the Plant Catalogue. The 2010 edition includes an additional "how to" section covering aspects of cultivation, pruning and care, etc.

One of my all-time favourite books and an essential addition to the home library.

New to Gardening, i needed a Great book ; This is my first Plant and Flower Book and i have no regrets with this purchase ; The Book is big and heavy and has a vast amount of information on plants and flowers etc ...
The perfect Reference book, even for the more experienced gardeners ; My Father, has enjoyed gardening for years and he thought the RHS Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers book was brill and he's learnt a lot, from it.
The illustrations are superb and the book is of high quality....

Loving this book but there are down sides! Im not sure about the way its layed out. The book is split into two sections the first is layed out in a strange mix of plant type and flower colour. The second is the description etc that is layed out in the normal alphabetical way. Still all the excellent colour pictures make up for any bad points.

I bought this for my pal who is studying as a gardener. She was very pleased as it is an excellent refernce book for all the plants and flowers she needs to learn about. It arrived promptly and was well packed and in excellent condition. It has to be the heaviest book that I've ever bought!!

Very good value...affordable.

Very useful gardening book when looking for plants for particular sites and soil types. Preferred the much earlier addition
which I had from Readers Digest many years ago.
