Book Description

17 Oct 1997 Encyclopedia
This is the first comprehensive A-Z guide to science fiction and fantasy art techniques. It also includes an inspirational gallery of finished works. This title includes professional tips and techniques and clear step- by-step instructions for a variety of popular styles -- from horror to heroic fantasy, from creatures to characterisation. An A-to-Z technique section provides a detailed look at all major media -- acrylics, airbrush, animation software, computer software, and pen and ink -- and explains how to apply each one. Also included are special "brainstorming" sections to let you see how an initial idea is developed to produce the final artwork. This creative resource also contains a gallery of works by some of the most innovative and renowned fantasy artists, including Chris Achilleos, Paul Bartlett, Jim Burns, Judith Clute, Danny Flynn, Brian Frowd, David A. Hardy, Jael, Peter Jones, Ian Miller, Dan Seagrave, Ron Tiner and Boris Vallejo. Whether you're a student or a professional artist, you'll discover that The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy Art Techniques is an invaluable reference for expressing your artistic imagination and polishing your technical skills.

First Sentence
Most artists gravitate toward a comparatively small selection of tools and materials: some will be happiest using gouache on canvas, with perhaps a touch of airbrush; others will prefer line and wash on cartridge paper, or oils on textured board, or . . . It is through such specializations, either deliberate or intuitive, that artists develop their own particular styles. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars A much loved book. 26 Oct 2007
By Laxon
Format:Paperback
My Dad got me this book for Christmas in 1996, and it's now a very battered looking book, sitting on my bookshelf at home. I've read it so many times, and it one of the best used and most loved book in my house. Despite now being 11 years old its still a very good book to have. The techniques used and exsplained in this book still hold true, even if more people are going digital these days. The imagery in this book is still awe inspiring, and it is cram packed full of them.

If you don't already own this book, buy it, now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 5 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
I too have owned this book for ages and its looking fairly bashed as well! I have found it to be the best piece of art reference material I've ever bought. It contains a bit of everything and was one of the main reasons why I went to college to study illustration.

Despite having been published quite a while ago I have to admit that I havent found anything that has been published since that is as comprehensive, easy to read and follow, not to mention as nicely illustrated!

It would be nice to see an updated version too (possibly in a larger format)

If you are interested in fantasy art techniques I would highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars F/SF Masterclass - Old School! 25 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Superb book on F/SF art techniques/concepts/genres with many fine examples, both of end products and the mechanics of production. There are three sections: Tools & Materials; Conceptualizing & Rendering and Themes; in which, non-art school British comics illustrator, Ron Tiner gives us the benefit of his considerable insight and talent - he really is an unsung hero of the genre, in my opinion. Published in the '90s and hence covering traditional (not digital) art, only.
