On the whole an excellent reference work, and I appreciate the enormous amount of work that has gone into compiling it. BUT: personally, I HATE the inclusion of gaming material (sorry Chaosium), particularly when it seems to push out material from more recent Lovecraftian fiction - very little is included from the nineties, which considering the amount of Cthulhu fiction on the Internet alone, seems very unbalanced. Several modern writers are pushing the Mythos in many different and interesting directions, and it seems a shame that this is being ignored. Maybe a revised THIRD edition is on the way.

A more minor grumble is that I feel the guide could be a bit more detailed in some entries, and in citing references. Several parts seem very sketchy. The appendices are great though!

All in all, not bad. But I think the definitive guide to the Cthulhu Mythos still remains to be written (and as welcome as the timeline is, I still think it could again be more comprehensive).

One final criticism - Chaosium: PLEASE CHANGE YOUR COVER ARTIST!!!! The original Mythos Fiction collections had OK covers, but the last dozen or so have been appalling, with no artistic merit or even relavance to the contents of the book; in most of them it's diificult to make out what is supposed to be portrayed. Modern sculpture looks bad enough in a gallery - PLEASE LEAVE IT OFF THE COVERS OF YOUR BOOKS!!!
