Anyone who thinks that coloured pencils are only for children to play with, or for doing rough sketches, should get hold of this book and consider changing their views. The reader is shown page after page of application methods and combinations with other media to produce unique and exciting work. Although a number of the works on display appear sketchy and unfinished, that is the nature of coloured pencil; and to balance this, the book contains a collection of virtuoso works that can easily hold their own as truly fine art pieces.

Early chapters cover materials, such as the various classes of pencil; application methods, use of coloured papers, the production of finely blended finishes and obtaining textures. Coloured pencil is shown in combination with pastel, watercolour and graphite, plus solvent markers and stencils. The second part of the book is split into landscape studies, grouped and decorative objects, animal portraiture, and the human form.

Prospective purchasers who want simplified step-by-step guidance to produce works "just like so-and-so artist" will need to look elsewhere; but as a companion book for the experimentalist and innovative creator, this book will provide hours of stimulation and lots of fresh ideas. As a style of book, I enjoy the various sizes of pictures and often surprising subject-matter that has been selected for publishing.

I thought this book was very helpful; every technique is demonstrated throughout it. There is color on every page giving you a better idea of how the technique is supposed to be used.

A nice book, but a little disorganised and bitty. Shows different examples but doesn,t go deeply into technique.
