Product Description

Review

'Unlike its predecessors, this Encyclopedia of British Football is not a listing of tables and results, or biographical descriptions of its stars, but an in-depth examination of the many different facets of the game from the anthropology of football to youth training schemes. Nowhere before, to my knowledge, has anyone tackled such a diverse array of topics including comic characters and crowd control, drama and drugs, law and literature, mascots and medals all within the same covers.' Gordon Taylor, Chief Executive, Professional Footballers' Association

Product Description

This reference work aims to provide sports enthusiasts, journalists, librarians, students and scholars with an authorative source of information on a comprehensive range of subjects covering the history and organization of football in Britain.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dull but worthy, 28 Dec 2002
By A Customer
The idea of a football reference work that extends beyond the normal statistical coverage to examine the issues in greater depth is a good one and initially this volume (clearly something of a labour of love) looks like a decent read.

Unfortunately first appearances can deceive. As befits an essentially academic creation, it is written in a very tedious discursive style. The entries are not able to cover topics in sufficient levels of detail to significantly improve upon other football reference works, or indeed even upon the better elements of the football press. It is also presented in a fairly pedestrian manner which does not encourage the reader to browse.

All in all, nice idea but mediocre execution.

Have you ever really read an encyclopedia? I mean really read one from end to end?
They are boring. That's not how they are meant to be used.

This book is exactly what it sets out to be .. and unfortunately it is unsatisfying.
As it covers the whole spectrum of British football it doesn't appeal to any one group.

With each entry only 500 to 1000 words, you feel that while the entry is well researched it bearly touches the surface before moving on.
Fortunately there is a list of sources .. but you will quickly be on the internet to find out more on the subject.

In the end this book fails.

It is not specific enough on any one entry, and not broad enough to cover all possible queries.
If you thumbed this book in store you wouldn't be taking it to the checkout.

I'll probably keep my copy ... but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.
Do another search and find a book that covers your favourite subject in better depth.
