This is a splendid book, 'the obvious place to look up any mainstream fact about Britain', even after the advent of the internet and wikipedia (well, wikipedia is never as succinct, concise, let alone witty as Mr Gascoine). Ever since I bought it in 1994 at WH Smith, I have reverted to it time and again, not just to look up an item I needed, but just for fun, to browse and be surprised at the comprehensiveness of the book. As such it is the most ideal and most educational of coffee table books. It says a lot about the physical quality that the book has not yet fallen apart (it hardly showns any signs of wear and tear) and the paper is still a beautiful white (no yellowing). While its main focus is of course on historical facts, I would welcome an update to bring the book a little more up to date with recent developments in Britain (New Labour, death of Princess Diana, Spice Girls, Irak and Afghanistan, Robbie Williams and all those things about football I know nothing about etc.). But, in its current form, I wouldn't want to miss it for the world.
