Product Description

Synopsis

Medical and scientific technology allow us to significantly alter nearly every aspect of human life. We can make people live longer. We can give children to the infertile. We can genetically engineer food and the time is approaching when we will be able to genetically engineer human beings. These developments influence our laws, our economies and our ethical systems. In this constantly changing field of bioethics, many issues have evolved to such a degree that they had barely emerged at the time of the 2nd edition. Ongoing debates are intensifying on a number of issues that were not covered in the 2nd edition, such as cloning, stem cell research, same-sex marriage and privatization of access to water. The articles included in this encyclopedia are multidisciplinary, covering such fields as medicine and health, business, scientific research, philosophy, politics and more.

An Excellent Reference Book in Bioethics 2 Mar 2009
By Ryan Pineda - Published on Amazon.com
This is an excellent book that a teacher can use in discussing sensitive topics in bioethics such as abortion, cloning, euthanasia and stem cell research. In its 3rd edition, the 457 entries were all updated. Entries are arranged alphabetically and most of these entries have sub-entries including medical, legal and ethical impacts. The entries also include perspectives of major and minor religious traditions. The concepts in the book will help students judge the effects of new scientific knowledge and its uses or potential harm to future generations. Although the articles are more designed for undergrad and graduate students, the book would be an excellent resource for students in AP Bio or Bioethics classes.
