Product Description

Ten years ago, Histoire and Collections published a book entitled Tanks of World War Two, which contained hundreds of color profiles and 3/4 views by Jean Restayn. This book was a great success but has been sold out for too long. So the time has come to publish a completely renewed version, with many additions. In this volume the proper tanks, battle tanks and light tanks, of every nation, which were involved in the various campaigns of WWII, from Poland to Berlin and from Libya to Normandy, from the earliest Panzer I to the latest British Cruiser tank, are represented in full color. Two additional volumes are scheduled in this Encyclopedia: Volume Two will be devoted to tank destroyers, self-propelled artillery and special purpose AFVs, while Volume Three will include the various types of wheeled armored cars and miscellaneous armored vehicles.returncharacterreturncharacter returncharacterreturncharacter REVIEWS returncharacterreturncharacter"High quality collection of color plates spanning multiple countries, theaters, and campaigns... this book will come in handy for many modelers."Armorama.com, 03/2008..".an incredibly diverse collection that will provide the inspiration for many... well worth having."Internet Modeler, 5/2008..".gathers together more than 500 color drawings, profiles, and three-quarter views, composing a vast compilation of Jean Restayn's work... beautiful...highly recommended...a great source for alternate markings to put on models of these tanks... rapidly becoming one of my favorites..."Cybermodeler, 06/2008

quite nice 24 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
as a military modeller, I ordered this book simply for the many colour drawings of AFV`s and their camouflage-schemes.

this is what this book is about. no photo`s, just nice drawings and some info, rather sparse, about the vehicles.

the earlier now out-of -print book from the same writer, about the same subjects, is also in my collection and that shows ,what this book is lacking. this book is just about tanks, like the name says. no half tracks, self-propelled guns and artillery, or any other
AFV`s. just tanks.

if you`re interested in camouflage schemes or about world war II tanks, this is quite a nice book. recommended

Fantastic Illustrations, Weak on Information. 10 Aug 2008
By Gary Gillespie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Encyclopedia of Tanks of World War II is an excellent book for what it is. In reality this book could be 4 times bigger to fulfill the project as a true encyclopedia of tanks. Most criticize the book for what it isn't rather than what it is.

On the positive side this is a book which gives the left profile of hundreds of tanks from nearly every nation that produced tanks in World War II. It includes many of the major nations like USA, Soviet Union, Germany, Great Britain, Japan. It also has tanks, from many minor countries like Romania, France, Croatia and more.

It shows the left profile of hundreds of tanks with their various camouflage throughout the war. Many of the profiles are of the same tank like Pnather, Tiger and Sherman but showing differnt camouflage schemes.

If you want a book which shows camouflage for hundreds of tanks as a painting guide, this is the book would be very helpful. Winter, desert, Russian front and almost every other major campaign is covered. Dozens of different camouflage patterns are depicted. It covers all the major tanks like Tiger, Panther, Sherman, but also includes numerous lesser known tanks from minor countries.

I highly reccommend this book as a primer of World War II tanks and its camouflage.

What the book is not....

There is very scant information given on each tank. There is basically only about one or two sentences about each tank but it gives almost no statistics in terms of production numbers or capabilities.

Giving only the left side profile of course means that it does not give a front, rear, right profile or an above view either. You of course therefore do not have a full composite of the camouflage or tank details for the entire tank.

I really enjoy the book and feel it is a good investment if you desire to see the camouflage of numerous tanks of World War II I can recommend it highly. There are so many tanks in this book which are very obscure and limited in production it will educate anyone in the various tanks from many nations. If you are looking for in depth information as to production numbers, vital statistics of the vehicles then you would be better to look elsewhere.

If you are a military artist who is looking for painting tanks in various camouflage schemes then I am hard pressed to think of a better all around work.

WWII Tank Encyclopedia 21 Mar 2008
By John H. Spear - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is a masterfull display of tank drawings in color. Having said this, if you are looking for technical expertise or even accuracy, this is not your book. examples; pg. 161, middle ill."this tank" no description as to wether it is a BT-7 or BT-5. pg.129 two views of Churchill Mk VI's one with the 75mm dual purpose gun , one with the 6 pounder. Restayn doesn't bother to note difference. pg 166 second ill. is a T-80 not a T-70. And if your'e going to show a T-80 in two ills.(about 120 made, Zaloga "Soviet Tanks WW2")why not one ill. of British Challenger (200 tanks plus or minus and certainly more significant)?

If you want to look at tanks buy this book, if you want to learn about tanks buy Zaloga, Hunnicutt, spielberger, doyle, or the old master, von Senger und Etterlin.

In passing Restayn does not appear to favor the United States and its book buying public as he starts the section on the U.S. off with "Far from being a peaceful nation, as it is all too often described....

EYE CANDY GALORE! 27 Mar 2008
By Chris Wingate - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
True; if you are looking for technical information this NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU! But if you are like me and love those side profile color illustrations contained within most books on tanks, this book will get you fully sedated. This book is page after page of side profile color illustrations, at least 3 per page and that's all it is except for a few pages with short introductions to each faction.

This is a well made book, every page is glossy full color, and bound in that new durable plastic-like material (not sure what it is) but it's not cheap thick paper like most "paper-backs."

I would say 40% of the book is German tanks, but I think that is more to include camouflage schemes than favoritism. Lets be honest though; most tread-heads are into German tanks. If you are buying this just for color German tank illustrations, just consider the other factions included to be a curious bonus. German tanks in Romanian, Finnish and Hungarian service are also included.
