1.0 out of 5 stars Mr Coates spread the pastry too thin ! 8 Jan 2002
Mr Coates is a great wine writer, with an accessible and interesting writing style. It is a shame he got tempted into the mass market book which doesn't really contribute much.

I purchased the book blind because his great books have not been updated since 1995. I thought his book would help with more recent wines. What a waste, there was no Vintage information that I could find. A real pity.

Hopefully the writter will update his classics rather than this stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb introduction to French wine 16 Jun 2003
As a relative amateur in the world of French wine I found this book absolutely invaluable. It starts with a useful history and background of wine in the region - giving interesting information without getting weighed down with technicalities - before tackling the range of French wine region by region. In reading it I've felt that I've learned a huge amount, without ever becoming bored.
It's value is much more than theoretical - on a recent trip around Burgundy and the Jura this book was our bible, enabling us to find the sometimes well-hidden treasures amongst the mass of producers and giving enough information for us to have an informed discussion while tasting. The only downside was it's size - it really doesn't fit in a glove compartment.
No doubt his more focussed works give more detail for the connoisseur (and his book on Burgundy is on my shopping list) but I would recommend this to anyone who, like me, loves French wine but is somewhat overawed by the apparent complexity of it all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Below Clive Coates standard 19 Dec 2000
By A Customer
French and wine lover I have read the pleasant and well documented "Cote d'Or a celebration of the great wines of burgundy" . When I saw that Clive Coates was " presently at work on his most ambitious project to date, a definitive Encyclopaedia of the Wines of France" I waited for the release of the book and immediately ordered it .

My expectations were (too) high , I was heavily disappointed.

As the name states , the book intend to be an encyclopaedia and this ambition to cover a lot of domains result in a very much telegraphic comment on each domains and a laconic description of the wines.

The maps which where very detailed in "Cote d'Or" are now in very nice colors but with a single map by region . Some maps are ok but maps as the one of "Northern Cotes de Nuits" are impossible to read. A good point is the precise description of the vintages, from 1988 to 1998 for each region.

May be my expectations were too high . This book remains a good introduction to the wines of France
