This, along with the Ashley Book of Knots, is one of the two "landmark" knot books. It belongs in the library of the serious knot researcher, but should not be the first or even second item in a new collection. That honor must go to Ashley.

This is not a guide for beginners. Most knots are photographed complete and tight, with precious little material on tying steps. Even expert tyers will find some of the photos dificult to follow. Organization is often poor, with knots of completely different appearance and use sometimes on the same page.

On the other hand, the sections on multi-strand knots, splicing, plaits, and decorative knotting are among the finest ever done, but again illlustrated directions are sparse.

Definitely find a copy and take a good look at this book, but make sure it is what you want before purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extensive knot encyclopaedia 15 July 2010
By Neil Lewis VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not primarily a how-to book, it's a compendium of knots with a large number of (small, b/w) photographs of knot variations. There are knots here you won't find anywhere else. The Ashley Book of Knots has more in depth descriptions, but not quite the coverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Advanced knotting in style 4 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
An amazing volume full of some of the most advanced knots, bends, hitches etc there have ever been this is truly the bible of knotting and a must for any one into this subject, there are so many in there you will be surprised. I thought I knew a lot of knots but this has opened my eyes to the fact I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to the art of knotting, so much food for thought with so many variations, great descriptions and history contained in this volume really lays it all out for you to explore and digest also to revist time and time again to learn more as there is so much to learn and take in on the subject which has been around for thousands of years.Highly recommended reading.
