About the Author
Both Peter Chamberlain and Hilary Doyle are much sought after experts in their field. Chamberlain continues to publish specialist books on related areas, like this one full of amazing detail. Evelyn Doyle now lives in Scotland with her partner of 14 years Michael. She trained as a psychiatric nurse, then became a police officer and later moved on to running her own patisserie company. She has one son, Benjamin, and grandson Joshua. Molly McCloskey, who collaborated with Evelyn, was born in 1964 in Philadelphia. She published her first collection of short stories, Soloman's Seal, in 1997. Her new collection, The Beautiful Changes, was published by the Lilliput Press in February 2002. She now lives in Ocean City, Co Sligo.

I recently bought this book, and it has to be said never have I encountered such detail. Firstly, it covers all german tanks and their variants developed and bulit fromm 1933-45. Secondly, it also covers any conceivable detail you cuold imagine. It tells you the manufacturer, radio set, angle and thickness of armour, even wether or not the turret was hand turned or not! Then it tells you about changes made to captured allied tanks, covers (in great detail) the radios, weapons, supplementary armour and total building amount of every german tank of world war two. Well worth buying.

One of the first books I ever bought when I became interested in military modelling was the hard back version of this book.
Mine is now a loose leaf edition and so I decided to buy this paperback version.
It is without doubt THE best reference you can get on WW2 German AFVs, covering all you need to know about tanks, armored cars and hal-tracks used by the Third Reich with all the photos you could ever need.
You will refer to it time and time again as it covers everything from PzKfw 1 to King Tiger and beyond. Giving such things as dates of production, details of variants etc and for the real anoraks amongst us, even chassis numbers!
If you need to tell the difference between a PzKw Mk IV Ausf J and Ausf K this is the book for you!

This book certainly achieves its goal of providing a definitive source for information of German AFV's in WW2 with a massive amount of well presented information. The book details the armoured vehicles used by Germany during WW2 as well as providing information of prototypes and well presented statistics on the vehicles performance. The glossary explains all the terms used well and Chamberlain, Doyle and Jentz can be very proud of this work. This is a useful and well-presented book with wealth of photographic material rarely seen elsewhere. A little dry for the casual browser perhaps but for the enthusiast a must-have book that will enrich any library it joins.

If your only going to own one book about German armour buy this. And even if you've got your own library buy it anyway.
The book consists of the following: oh yeah, Pz = Panzer + v = plus variants
Introduction, Explanatory notes, Glossary of technical terms, Pz1 + v, Pz2 + v, Pz35t and 38t + v, Pz3 + v, Pz4 + v, Pz5(panther)+ v, Pz6(tiger) + v, Miscellaneous fully tracked vehicles, Semi-tracked vehicles, Armoured cars and wheeled armoured vehicles, French AFV's in German service, Italian AFV's in German service, Captured enemy vehicles in German service,
You also get appendices on Tank armament, Ammunition, Radio equipment, Optical equipment, Engines, Supplementary armour, German AFV production, Tank and unit designations
Each chapter follows the vehicle through prototypes, production models and variants, with each Ausf or model having a individual section. Each of THESE section is further divided into : Technical data,history,specific features and combat history.
Well illustrated throughout with black and white photo's including most of which I had never seen before , the authors try to show as many variants and models as possible. There are some truly odd things here, how about french halftracks with a 24 rail 80cm rocket launcher on the the back? or ( my favourite ) the Panzerjager Bren, thats right captured Bren gun carriers with 3 forward firing Panzerschrecks(bazookas) mounted over the body:-)
What more can I say, incredibly comprehensive, well illustrated. the first thing I bought from Amazon. A great book

Every model and variant along with every modification are covered with a thorough (and accurate) description including deployment details and full protective scheme, weapon characteristics, the lot. Virtually deviod of errors and packed with interesting information. The title is exactly what you get inside.
If you only ever buy one work on German armour but this one, if you buy two get another one of these in case you lose the first one.

Over the years I have picked up a small library of books on this subject. While I could most assuredly compile more information on each individual vehicle from my other books, there is none that presents such a complete and comprehensive coverage in one volume.
Superbly concentrated and offering one or two gold nuggets even for the veterans on the subject, it is undoubtedly the best buy available.
It is the book I would have wanted from the beginning and it is the last book Ill leave behind as far as this subject goes.

I've been into German WW2 tanks for about 37 years and I find that this book is the best that I have come across, This is the referance book to have if this is your interest.

The information that one can glean from this book is astounding and is a credit to the authors and researchers. It can be a bit dry to read even the small amount of background information (hence the four stars) but as a referance book it is exceptional. The best part of this book, to me, is the section on captured AFVs pressed into service by the Germans. It takes a certain type of bravery to use the opposing side's armour in the confusion of battle!
It is what it says it is - an Encylopaedia, nothing more. Not very readable but there are other books for that.
