    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The first hurdle to negotiate when using this is installing the software off the disc. I tried on two different PCs and the installation ground to a halt with no explanation.

Only when I rebooted the PC and had nothing else running did it install.

Then I set about using it. For something well known like the Bayeux Tapestry, it is fine and gives a good basic summary. However, when we started to research Live Aid, there wasn't a single word on the event.

I was hoping for something that claims to be the ultimate 2012 edition, it would have up to date coverage of recent events.

I wouldn't expect the breadth of Wikipedia, and in many ways it is superior as it is more succinct and accurate, but it does lack start points for widely known subject matter that does arise in school projects.

On the school work my 12 year old and 7 year old have done in recent weeks, it has come third behind Google and Wikipedia, and not necessarily added a great deal.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I requested this to see first hand the progress of Britannica in its current incarnation. I was pleasantly surprised by the resources it immediately offered for students and young children. I could see how, if available at school or public libraries, it could be the first go-to resource. I know that if i had this reference during my school days, I would have been over the moon and browse through each subject section. It would have made learning fun.

However for the everyday check ups on references (adult and advanced students), I was severely let down by its clunky interface.

Lets face it: the elephant in the room is Wikipedia and Google.

    1) It does not feel as clean as Wikipedia and certainly on more esoteric subjects, the entries are scanty. That being said, there is a lot of junk in wikipedia but a true scholar would sift through the bits that sounded like rumour.

    2) A search on wikipedia brings up related articles: and the specific article itself would have links to other key phrases and even the references if available online. I find it disappointing that Britannica offers no such ability even in its Ultimate suite.

    3) there are not as many pictures offered.

What was even more disappointing was that during the attempts to manual update it, I got a Apache 404 error notification.

Now that I have finished brandishing its faults, I must reiterate that the younger section is bright and welcoming and the well known topics are covered well. The same faults for the advanced section play no part here. It would be silly for everyday subjects to ask a primary school kid to go to wikipedia. I was actually engrossed by how each section would draw you in, eg see the astronomy section. I can see how this would instill a love of learning and how to use a computer to reference.

The other facility that other resources do not have, is the ability to make notes to an article in a separate column. It is a useful function, but not the killer feature.

Offering a dictionary, thesaurus and atlas, it looks good on paper but a part of me feels that Britannica is a backup when your internet connection is offline, especially when so many browsers allow you to search by just typing into the address bar. I am probably doing it a disservice by stating this but it is true... which application would you open faster?

For the children and young'uns I am willing to push my original rating from 3 to 4 stars. If you have a young family, this would actually be ideal if only to keep them off the big bad internet with its various distractions.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It's straight forward to install from disk and once installed it is easily accessible from the Start/All Programs menu (Windows PC). You can also uninstall from the same menu.
When you first set it up, there are three levels that you can choose from; for ages 6-10, 10-14, and older students & adults. If there are multiple users on the same computer, it is obviously a good idea to leave the choices open, but if you want to save a click when accessing the encyclopaedia, it is possible to select your preferred option and it will automatically go to your choice on startup of the programme.

The layout and navigation is good. Other than the obvious Search field, there are 5 main options from the home screen: Dictionaries, Atlas, Timelines, Workspace and Update Centre (more about that later). The colours are not particularly exciting, but it's not uncomfortable to look at and easy to get an overview. There are options to change font size if necessary.

The searches I've done generally generate good results with sober and to the point information in the articles and options to search for further information online, in media archives, tables or in Britannica's Yearbooks.

It is, however, important to stress that this will never be the best tool for up-to-date information on e.g. politics or economics. As an example, there are no further online search results for Greece, no separate Search entry for "Financial crisis" (I'm aware it is a general term search, but still - It is, however, referred to under Economy and Iceland....). No separate Search result for Helle Thorning-Smith, Denmark's first female PM elected in 2011. Wikipedia will be a better help - also with online references - in this case. This brings me back to the Update Centre mentioned above. The information about Helle Thorning-Smith etc. might be available in the updated version, but I've tried to update for the past two weeks without success. This is the answer I get from customer support when I contact them about not being able to update: "Currently, our registration site is not functioning properly due to a technical issue. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you and we hope to have this matter resolved as soon as possible. Your product has been successfully registered, but there are known errors that are preventing your software from communicating with our site. This issue should be resolved soon." and they do not have a date for when it's up and running, and until that point, I will not know if the updates are making the product fully up-to-date functional or just remains a good reference of the past

The default option for searches is to keep previous searches and open a new tab for new ones, but it is also possible to change the preferences to open the search results in the same tab (whether for privacy reasons if it's a shared computer or if you find it annoying with too many tabs open - Internet browser style)

With the updates, it is obviously better than the physical encyclopaedias - and much less space consuming - but I'm not sure it beats good Internet research for contents and relevance.
