2.0 out of 5 stars the world has moved on, 28 Mar 2004
By A Customer
I bought this as a birthday gift for my young children, but thought I would try it out first - just in case. Well, I'm glad I did as it gives me time to find another present.

I expected to find lots of information on countries - cultural information, the food they eat, what its like, native wildlife, and plenty of multimedia, eg language snippets. I expected my son to be able to type in "train" into the search box and find out about how steam trains work. But no. Country information is very limited. Poor, static map, no zooming, very few links to cities for more info. And trains? Well, nothing relevant there either - all about automotive power trains, and people training others, etc. I eventually found that it was so American that typing railroad got me a bit closer.

If you, like me are used to the web, know about Google and Multimap and online Dictionaries, image searching tools, etc, then it makes me wonder what this product really adds? I actually don't want to know the GDP of Andorra.

The user interface is poor, with windows hidden behind windows (no back button as on a browser), and images flashed up in the way when you don't want them.

My children have used products like Dorling Kindersley's World Explorer, which is wonderful in comparison. I was hoping that Encyclopedia Brittanica would be a well designed, modern, multimedia product. But it doesn't feel like it - more like an old fashioned product hurriedly converted to an on-screen format.

I have high standards, so maybe I'm being too harsh? So on a positive note, I guess it protects children a little from finding unsavoury items on the internet when they innocently run a search. The limited information on the CDs may indeed be backed up by links to hand selected material on the web. So maybe that is what you are really buying when you purchase this product?

And as the packet says, it has won over 20 awards from teachers, parents, etc. So at least somebody likes it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great start for children!, 19 May 2004
I bought this for a relatives children to use, I did give it a quick go before I gave it to them to make sure it works and I found it to be simple to use and well laid out (and if I can use it anyone should be able to!). The atlas section although not as detailed as some is fine for children of their age to see where the various countries and cities of the world are located!

Initially you may need to show your children how to use the program but once they have the hang of it they will spend hours infront of it whilst you are safe in the knowledge that they are not looking at anything they shouldnt be!

I'm told the kids find it very helpful with their schoolwork (although next year they would like something a less educational im told!)so it seems this product is a winner!
