From the Back Cover

Having now gained a reputation as one of the most reliable and creative directors at leading Hong Kong studio Golden Harvest, Sammo re-invented the action-horror genre with 1980's Encounters of the Spooky Kind. This high energy combination of Kung fu, special effects and horror proved to be another ouststanding success for Harvest and efeectively created an entire sub-genre in the world of Hong Kong filmmaking.

Sammo stars as Cheung the Brave, a local hero, whose specialty is to spend the night in haunted houses. When his conniving wife hires a Taoist priest to lure him into a trap which will either scare him to death or bring about his demise at the hands of living corpses, he teams up with a rival priest to do battle with deadly opponents from both this world and the next.

This is another great Golden Harvest movie directed by and starring Sammo Hung. The film blends slapstick horror comedy and kung fu action together with awesome results. A Hong Kong box office smash "Encounters of the spooky kind" is quoted as being a mix between "Evil Dead" and "Fist of Fury". It's a top Sammo film, not as good as some of his other stuff but far greater than the poor sequel that was made a decade later.

I first saw this film about 7 years ago at about 3am on channel 4. I cant describe how quirkily good it is, even if your not a kung fu flick fan (which I am). Everything seems fresh and full of imagination. This film has it all, hopping reanimated chinese vampires, voodoo, slapstick comedy, excellently choreographed martial arts, possesion by monkey gods.. the list goes on. If you can handle a film not being in the blueprintHollywood style then you could do far worse than this. Excellent.

In this period movie Sammo Hung plays a guy who never shies away from a bet, and agrees to stay in a haunted temple overnight. It is then that he becomes victim to some awful spooky encounters, which are actually being conjured up by a guy who knows a variation of voodoo. But worse is to come...

After returning from his escapades in the temple, he returns home only to find his place blood-stained, trashed and his wife supposedly murdered (although not there to confirm otherwise), and the police, led by the great Lam Ching-Ying ('Magnificent Butcher', 'Eastern Condors' -- sadly, he died in 1997), arrest him. He breaks out of jail and is soon on the run. However, all is soon set for the climactic battle, which is quite different to what you may have seen before...

This contains some brilliant comic moments (particularly the zombie that follows Sammo's every move -- almost!) and the choreography is undeniably among the best he's done that show his surprising range of mobility for someone his size. The ruck where he uses Monkey-style Kung Fu is amazing!
