So, it is obvious that this album is over priced if we take the amount of new recordings into account. So should you get it? Well, let me tell you about the new recordings. 'Whistle Down The Wind' I feel you might already know, it is a wonderful song but I don't know about this version of it. Tina Arena had the orchestra behind her do a much better job than this orchestra does for Sarah. This version is toned down and you can almost say boring. There is not build up or climax like there is in Tina Arena's version. Sarah does sound wonderful, its the music that is the let down. 'One More Walk Around The Garden' is a track I don't mind yet I never go out of my way to put it on. It's slow and it sounds nice, but again, sounds a tad boring. 'What More Do I Need' is finally a much more lively song, Sarah's voice is excellent and you can hear her acting through her voice. Has a little bit of jazz in it, it's a positive feeling song that will make you smile. 'In The Mandarin's Orchid Garden' does nothing for me, it's a very different song, and I think it could be enjoyed, its just not my type of thing. It almost has this mischievous feeling to it - I don't know if that was intended.
The songs that us Sarah song's have already heard are definetly a delight. 'Surrender' is a gorgeous song, I think everyone should hear it. 'Think of Me' is a different choice from 'Phantom' for once - however it's no different to the cast recording since Raoul cuts in the middle of it, they could have least cut that out so the song could stand on its own.
Who should get this cd? If you don't have any Sarah's musical cd's then yes. If you were unable to get the rarity 'Songs That Got Away' then yes. If you are a Sarah beginner then yes. If you own 'Surrender', 'The ALW collection' and 'Songs That Got Away' then it's only for you to decide. I recommend yes, since there are songs you haven't got, but you can feel outraged along with me that we are being milked of our money. If you are deciding on which show tune cd to get of Sarah's I suggest you buy 'Surrender: The Unexpected Songs' instead.
So, you decide, I should mention that this is an excellent cd, it has fantastic songs from fantastic shows but may I mention that the 'Untitled Track' at number 16 ..does NOT exist...There are 15 tracks on this album not 16.
I don't mind having Encore, for its new material, but it kind of hurts the wallet when you learn that the songs you paid lots for are already on another 2 cds you already own. The album would have worked out a lot better if there was a new version of La Wally, where Sarah doesn't get drowned out in the end. It's too bad, that was a lovely song to perform on her cd Time to Say Goodbye.
Whistle down the wind is indeed a beautiful song, but it sort of ties the knot between old and new material. I mean, all the songs are older, less known and less in demand. I wish that there were lots of photos and some collaboration with Frank Peterson on Encore. The cd does seem cold, lost and wishing for something really new and enticing.
The cover is pretty nice, though. I love gothic costume, and I think the net veil over Sarah's head suits an album like this, or a Classical cd. This photo should have been reworked and used for a future Brightman cd cover. I am not sorry for buying Encore, because to update my Sarah Brightman collection is fine.
The album is definitely for the diehard Brightman cd collector.
One terribly bad thing...I absolutely dislike Chi Il bel sogno Di Doretta. This song is so old-fashioned, done by Sarah. This was done when Sarah was less experienced in her Bel-Canto style.
So, I spoke my word. You decided now, whether or not you want the cd.
