The enchanter has imprisoned his daughter in his palace on an icy mountain; longing for company, she begs him for books, which he carelessly gives her. Through them, she discovers the world - adventure and romance, people and families - and names (she has no name). The enchanter tells her she was once a rose, a fish, a fawn; but in testing these identities, she finds that he has not told her the truth. Then he allows her to become a small bird - and she escapes, enduring perils, to discover the real mother from whom he stole her, a poor widow. The girl's name was indeed Thi-Phi-Yen (pretty flying bird); regaining her human form, she is glad to give up the enchanter's wealth for the simple gifts of love and freedom. Barber tells her original tale with grace and dignity. Le Cain's opulent illustrations are in an oriental style; richly patterned, with elegantly elaborate borders, they contribute to the story's beauty and drama. Lush and lovely. (Kirkus Reviews)

This book is incredible. The moving story is told gracefully and vividly, and the illustrations are intricate and rich.

I would hope that it will be printed again as it really should be read by more people. Children aged seven and above would like the fairy-tale quality of the story, and teenagers to adults would like it for its artistic value (and perhaps for the story too).

The Enchanter's Daughter is one of the best stories for 4-7s ever, gorgeously illustrated by the great Erroll le Cain - shame on the publishers for dropping it! The Enchanter lives at the top of the highest mountain in the world in his magical castle, with only his lovely daughter for company. While he searches for the secret of eternal life, she, bored and lonely, begins to wonder who her mother is. The enchanter tells her one lie after another, transforming her into different animals until at last she is changed into a "pretty little bird". With desperate courage, she flies on her tiny wings over the mountain range to fall fainting on the snow-line, where she is discovered by a peasant boy and his mother. This is her true family, for which she gladly gives up all riches and comfort.
I suspect this is a tale inspired by the adoption of many Chinese girls by rich Europeans, but it is also about the passionate love between mother and daughter. I particularly recommend it for when daughters need comfort and reassurance.
