5.0 out of 5 stars superb 11 July 2010

This is one of the magnificent John Renbourn Group albums. It's a complete injustice that it's not much better known, as albums don't get much better than this. Every part is nigh on perfect , the instrumental playing, the singing and the choice of songs. My personal favourite is "the Maid on the Shore" which I could listen to forever (more or less.....).Very highly recommended

Renbourn is in great form on this on this album - his guitar work is intricate and beautiful and his choice of material is spot on, ranging from medieval and renaissance French tunes through traditional English folk to an original, extended Indian flavoured instrumental. 'The Plains Of Waterloo' is simply the finest folk performance I have ever heard. The backing band are masterful and he's teamed up again with Jacqui McShee who is in particularly good voice throughout.

This 1980 release is another beautiful album from John Renbourn. I first came to Renbourn through the music of Pentangle, and then fell in love with his later albums such as this where he leaves his folk rock past behind and gives free reign to his baroque jazz tendencies, pretty much inventing the genre of baroque jazz along the way.

This album is very medieval in tone, with stately court music much in eveidence. Aided by sweet vocals and flutes, Renbourn and co deliver what could have been run of the mill early music, but they put their own stamp on it, the odd jazzy flourish or bluesy inflection, giving it a unique tone. It's till stately and elegant, and features much of Renbourn's sublime guitar playing, but it is also fresh, and has something to say. It's a beautiful piece of music, 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic performances 14 Jun 2010

I had been something of a fan of pentangle in the 60's and 70's and had recently reawakened my taste for their style of music. I had been unaware of this CD but have been delighted to dicover it: the blend between Jacqui McShee and John Renbourne is perfect without the frankly unpleasant vocal offerings of Bert Jansch, and the other members of the group contibute new colours to the pallette. A very enjoyable CD and one to be highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Album 2 Dec 2000
By Steve Vrana - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If John Renbourn is capable of recording a bad album, I've yet to hear it. This is the second incarnation of the John Renbourn Group. [Fiddler Sue Draheim has been replaced by multi-instrumentalist John Molineux (dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle).] Still on board is Jacqui McShee who provides vocals on the standout track "The Plains of Waterloo."
Other highlights include the eight-and-a-half minute instrumental piece "Sidi Brahim," which features flute, guitar, tabla and swalamandala. Equally impressive is the opening medley, which couples the gorgeous harmonies on "Pavane 'Belle, Qui Tiens Ma Vie'" with the instrumental "Tourdion." There are also two a cappella numbers: the group singing of "The Truth from Above" and McShee's solo rendering of "A Bold Young Farmer."
Originally released in 1980, the group would record only one other album, the equally stunning live recording Live In America in 1981. If you are a fan of British folk music in general or the music of Pentangle in particular (Renbourn's previous band), this album will not disappoint. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up 21 Jun 1999

Excellent follow-up to the superb "A Maid In Bedlam" album. This one covers pretty much the same territory as the first, but is also a must. A gorgeous blend of medieval/renaissance British Isles music that, like "A Maid In Bedlam" must be heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars 40 minutes of Estacy! 1 Feb 2003

I have followed John Though his entire career. This is by far the best record he has ever been associated with! Half of the Pentagle musicians play on it, including the female singer par folk excellence! On this record, you will here authentic interpretations of midevil & renaissance folk music played and sung in full harmonies by the masters. I kid you not! This is an essential spin for authentic, traditional folk lovers!

One of my favorites. Plains of Waterloo, Sidi Brahim are especially great but not a bad song on the album and the quality is excellent.
