For a unique Christmas CD look no further than this unusual release. It is unusual because it is a collection of recordings of Victorian Musical Boxes, Hand bells, Church bells, Barrel organs, street pianos, Hand bell choir and brass Band. The whole release has a very strong Victorian atmosphere to it. It is a joyous celebration of Christmas and an imagined echo of a time gone by.
The sound of the Musical Box is a sound from long ago but it is still a sound full of vigour and magic.
All of the instruments came from a collection by collector Roy Mickleburgh from Bristol. The recording is special because the collection was sold off after Roy's death. The recordings are important because the sound lives on and can be enjoyed today, just as it was in Victorian times. Also of importance is the sound of the hand bell. A sound that is neglected these days.
The recording begins and ends with church bells from St Mary Redcliffe. Bristol. And there is also the sound of a brass band that adds to the atmosphere.
This is a very special release and offers a different sound to the sort of Christmas music we get today.

Far From The Beaten Paths 6 Dec. 2000
By Nicholas Croft - Published on
Format: Audio CD
The recordings of mechanical instruments, featured on this disk, come from the collection of Roy Mickleburgh. The collection was sold off after Roy's death, but many fine recordings were produced before the instruments were dispersed.
Instruments featured on 'Enchanted Carols' include: Victorian Music Boxes, Handbells, Barrel Organs, Street Pianos and Church Bells.
During Christmas time, we are often bombarded by a variety of holiday music. Sadly, few recordings we are likely to hear while shopping, will capture the same inventive and whimsical spirit evoked in these works.
Indeed, to maintain any sense of reverence for the holiday at all, in our rabid globally driven market economy, it may be wise to go beyond the well trodden paths and explore unorthodox musical territory.
'Enchanted Carols' remains a first rate example of the possible fruits in choosing such an oblique strategy for the Holiday.

not just machinery 27 Nov. 2005
By John K. - Published on
Format: Audio CD
just to note that there are also choirs and handbells on this disc, at least on my vinyl version, which I suspect is the same, so the disc is indeed more enchanted than might be inferred from descriptions of just mechanical instruments. Lovely and nostalgic indeed. It seems to capture the spirit, without the commerciaization.

like walking into an old time department store 30 Dec. 2002

very nice sounds from seldom-heard instruments. All together, the results provide the sort of vague, whistful nostalgia for Christmas as you might get from a flickery silent movie.

Truly "magical" Christmas album 11 Oct. 2010
By A piano teacher - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Takes christmas a step beyond the music box albums... a glorious shambles of mechanical boxes, "disc pianos" (?), choir/handbell performers, tower bells, and warm, warbly street bands. The variety of performance media is unique, but the arrangement is also fascinating - many of the famous tunes are passed from one kind of device to the next, building cumulatively in a way that a single music box cannot do. A great success.
