Reminiscent of Jacobs Ladder and with shades of Donnie Darko, the plot winds its way, Rubiks cube-like, to a satisfyingly twisted climax. At times sinister, surprising and striking, and with an endearingly hapless hero, EMR is a refreshingly British take on the thriller that will make you think twice the next time you knock back a couple of aspirin.

Interesting debut; worth a look...,
By Jack London (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Emr [DVD] (DVD)
an interesting debut for British directors James Erskine & Danny McCullough. Made on a shoestring, the film is nevertheless technically accomplished. Acting is on the whole impressive, though let down by a few weak performances. The story follows Adam (Adam Leese in his debut): a geek caught up in a web of conspiracies. However as the plot unravels in a confusing and round-about way, the audience starts to realise - even if Adam doesn't - that the reality of his situation is actually worse than his paranoid ravings. One gets the feeling that this was a film made under 'indy' circumstances and could have benefited from a bit more preparation time and money. Nonetheless, for a small indy film, it punches above its weight and certainly leaves one hungry for more. Well worth a look, particulary for anyone interested in the DIY film ethic. Roger Corman's spirit lives on...

PRETTY ENTERTAINING,
By Anton Ilinski - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: EMR [DVD] [2004] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
"EMR" is a story of Adam who starts to suffer seizures presumably because of the drug he's taking for epilepsy. After these seizures he finds himself in strange places including other countries. He meets people who don't recognize him the next day, or he doesn't recognize those he met although they insist they've spent some time together. Adam comes to a conclusion it's a conspiracy initiated by the pharmaceutical company whose drug he's taking. Well, in short Adam's life turns into a nightmare, some paranoic delusion. In this kind of movies where you can't tell reality from the dream everything usually depends on the ending and how creators of the film would manage it. In "EMR" the ending is rather interesting and unexpectable although I had a feeling I'd already seen this sort of intrigue in some other flick. So maybe it won't come as a surprise for you either, but I have to say "EMR" is rather entertaining to watch, it's pretty well done for a low-budget independent movie. Not sure that you have to buy it, better rent and make you own opinion. I thought it was fine to spend an evening with but don't expect some kind of a revelation - it's not "Memento" or anything like that. |
