A nuanced account of global oil inter-relationships,
By
This review is from: Empires of Oil: Corporate Oil in Barbarian Worlds (Hardcover)
This book is a refreshing counterbalance to many apocalyptic accounts of 'oil/resource wars' and corporate malfeasance. Based on long experience with the petroleum industry and deep familiarity with Africa in particular, Clarke correctly conveys the complexity of the modern oil world. He correctly identifies the role of new actors, states and national oil companies, in contrast to the 'supermajors' often still wrongly thought to have a stranglehold on global oil. The book is thought-provoking for those trying to map out new world energy strategies, or trying to understand the evolving role of oil in the developing world in particular.
