This is a film that somehow slipped under the radar to most people but is actually really worth rediscovering for anyone who like 80s nostalgia type gangland/clubland thrillers or gay themed movies (I think it is like a Southern counterpart to the Northern "The Fruit Machine", which is another "must have" for fans of these movies, also worth checking out is "Letter To Brezhnev" which is kinda similar).
I first discovered Empire State when I was growing up in the early 2000s on VHS and I would say that in a way it changed my life. It shows a London I can remember growing up in and captures the excitement of going out and getting ready for clubbing perfectly. The gay themes (yes I am gay) are also really nicely done and reassuring in a sweet way for a young gay guy growing up (it's hard to explain, but "The Fruit Machine" is the same). It's well acted and I think would appeal to straight people aswell as it's entertaining, got good action and cleverly directed (I would of liked a Q&A with the director Ron Peck as he seems really interesting) and has an amazing synth pop/hi-nrg 80s soundtrack (Yello, Jimmy Sommerville/Communards, New Order and the bloke who did the songs in "Howling 2").
There's something about this movie I can go back to and always enjoy, makes me wanna go back to 80s London and also is kinda life affirming. Not for everyone, but for those who try it it's worth it.
The DVD/Blu-ray combo pack has good extras (spread over 2 the DVD and Blu-ray for some reason) and looks astonishing in HD on Blu-ray (the DVD doesn't look so good).
